What Did They Say? cover

Yeah, What DID They Say?

Picture this. Driving down a long highway with the windows down, when a warm breeze flows through the open space and caresses' your hair. You feel the heat from the sun on your nose as you gently wrap your fingers around the steering wheel. Then suddenly, you gasp and reach for the radio knob and turn it to the right to crank up the volume.

Your favorite song from yesteryear fills your car and ears and immediately brings you the familiar sensation of comfort and youth! As you're singing along, you realize you don't remember what the lyrics are in some spots, so you make them up. After all, you can't miss a beat. Then as the song ends, you giggle to yourself at your new made-up lyrics!

car

The phenomenon of people singing incorrect lyrics has been around since the conception of music and can be quite entertaining! We're going to take a look at some classics and hope you'll share some of your own genius creations below!

Tiny Dancer by Elton John

  • Misheard: “Hold me closer Tony Danza”
  • Correct: “Hold me closer tiny dancer”

This misheard lyric became almost as famous as the song itself. In an episode of 'Friends', when discussing romantic songs; Phoebe is quoted in saying her favorite love song was “the one that Elton John wrote for that guy on ‘Who’s the Boss’.”

Drift Away by Uncle Kracker/Dobie Gray

  • Misheard: “Give me the Beach Boys and free my soul”
  • Correct: “Give me the beat boys and free my soul”

This is a comical misheard lyric but I think they were onto something. Beach Boys definitely move my soul too!

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

  • Misheard: “Saving his life from this warm sausage tea”
  • Correct: “Spare him his life from this monstrosity”

I don't think we can blame anyone for not remembering all the words to Bohemian Rhapsody - there are a lot. We should also keep it real, warm sausage tea DOES sound like quite a monstrosity.

cat

We Will Rock You by Queen

  • Misheard: “Kicking your cat all over the place”
  • Correct: “Kicking your can all over the place”

Apparently Queen needs to learn to enunciate better but we can't help but giggle (and Cringe!) at the thought of kicking a cat all over the place. #CatLivesMatter too folks!

I’m a Believer by The Monkees

  • Misheard: “Then I saw her face, now I’m gonna leave her”
  • Correct: “Then I saw her face, now I’m a believer”

I don't even care what the real lyrics are anymore, I am definitely singing “Then I saw her face, now I’m gonna leave her” from now on!

taco

Cups (When I’m Gone) by Anna Kendrick/Pitch Perfect

  • Misheard: “You’re gonna miss me by my walk, you’re gonna miss me by my taco”
  • Correct: “You’re gonna miss me by my walk, you’re gonna miss me by my talk, oh”

Just LOL! Both are probably right but my guess is he's going to miss the taco the most. I mean who doesn't love a hard shell taco from Taco Bell every now and again, right?

Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell

  • Misheard: “If it ain’t paradise, then put up a parking lot”
  • Correct: “They paved paradise to put up a parking lot”

This feels like an ultimatum but isn't it fascinating how these statements have almost the exact opposite meaning. It's amazing how a few words can entirely change the sentiment.

That Summer by Garth Brooks

  • Misheard: “Burnin' boltin' butterknife!”
  • Correct: “Burning both ends of the night”

This may not be a popular misheard lyric but it's real and came from yours truly! I was driving in the car with my family once (when I was a kid) and I was just singing my heart out to this song when suddenly my brother stops, turns to me and says "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?" I just shrugged and smirked!

It is now YOUR turn to share your own funny misheard lyrics below!
