5 Fabulous Covers! cover

Maybe the OG Isn't The Best?!

In the entertainment industry, it is not unusual for artists to do 're-makes' of other people's work. We've seen it in various mediums including film, television and music. Covering a song made famous by someone else takes a ton of courage, requires a special formula and a side of luck. The new artist will constantly be compared to the OG (Original) so they have to bring something special and fresh to the song. Check out five hits we think have delivered all the right ingredients to bring an old tune, new life!

Poor Poor Pitiful Me - Warren Zevon

Originally released in 1976 by Zevon, the song fell flat for the listeners. A year later Linda Ronstadt reversed the genders and picked up the sass that turned this forlorn tune into a Top 40 hit! We definitely prefer the female take and even give Terri Clark a nod for keeping the girl power alive with her own cover of the song, over a decade later.

Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins

Penned in 1965 by Perkins, this song is considered one of the very first rockabilly records. Perkins had great success with this hit and it was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, but even with that considered - nothing compares to the King himself, Elvis Presley. A few pioneers of Rock N Roll covered this song but our hearts lie with Elvis' rendition that gave it life and undeniable energy.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Robert Hazard

Who? Exactly. Can you imagine a male singing this Cyndi Lauper smash hit? The OG had more of a rock edge, felt rushed and missed the fun and flair. We're definitely crowning Ms. Lauper as the rightful artists of this bubbly, fun and contagious pop hit!

Hurt - Nine Inch Nails

Released in 1994 by Nine Inch Nails, the song was quiet, whispery and subdued. While it performed well, Cash released his own version in 2002 and left his audience covered in chills and sobbing like children. He requested to record the song due to its sincerity and meaning and he delivered that in such a way that it is regarded as some of the very best work of his career.

Me and Bobby McGee - Kris Kristofferson

The song was written by Kristofferson but originally recorded by Roger Miller. Other notable artists such as Gordon Lightfoot and Charlie Pride took a swing at releasing a cover but no one truly found the secret sauce until 1971 when Janis Joplin interjected her rock edge and brassy vocals. Her hit was released posthumously (after she passed) and cemented her legacy in rock n roll history.
