History Lesson: St. Patrick's Day!

St. Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on March 17 of each year. It is named after the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick, and marks the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The day is celebrated largely in Ireland and by Irish (or wanna be Irish) people around the world! The popular icons that reflect this holiday are the color green, shamrocks, leprechauns and rainbows! (A little green beer never hurt anyone either!)

The history of St Patrick’s Day is linked with the spread of Christianity in Ireland and was first celebrated as a religious feast in the early seventeenth century. Today, St. Patrick’s Day has become a popular holiday in the United States and Canada with festivals, parades and parties! Musical celebrations of St Patrick’s Day are also popular and often feature traditional Irish music, such as jigs, reels, and airs. Many of these songs have their roots in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, such as ‘The Foggy Dew’, ‘The Galway Piper’, and ‘The Wearing of the Green’.

Some of the most famous Irish singers include Sinead O'Connor, Enya, The Cranberries, Thin Lizzy, U2, The Dubliners, The Corrs, Van Morrison, and the Pogues. Irish music has a rich history and has been popularized through the works of well-known Irish singers, songwriters, and bands. Irish music gets its unique sound from instruments such as the fiddle, accordion, tin whistle, pipes, and bodhran.
