Trevor Talks
It's no secret how much the SingSnap community means to the team behind the platform, especially to SingSnap creator Trevor! Recently we celebrated fifteen years of music, friendships, collaboration and all else that we're so grateful for on SingSnap. To further celebrate over a decade in business, we sat down and chatted with Trevor about everything SingSnap, as well as how it has grown and expanded within recent years.
When asked how SingSnap began and what the inspiration was behind it, Trevor explained that the initial idea came around when the concept of the internet first appeared in 1998. Although the idea was there, the technology didn't yet exist to make it fully come to life. Starting out as a website called 'Stream Karaoke', around 2005 Trevor and a small team stumbled upon a new technology that allowed members to create their own recordings.
When the site began to gain momentum, Trevor shares that it was a complete surprise how SingSnap and its community turned out. At first, the goal was simply to create a vehicle for people to record their own music - but quickly, the site grew to become a very positive place where users were able to make friends from anywhere in the world and to spread goodwill as well as the joy that comes from music. The transformation from song recording website to community happened naturally and easily, providing a safe space for Snappers who felt as if they didn't have a friend in the world to express, themselves through song!
Trevor describes himself as feeling very taken aback when the accepting community aspect of the platform began to grow! At this point in time, social media was new to the world which further inspired the creation of what SingSnap has grew to today - a place where people worldwide can interact and spread positivity.
"When people sing they really emote; and you can really feel sometimes that the person is pouring more than just the words into the song, they're pouring their heart and soul into it because they're feeling hurt or happy or whatever it may be." - Trevor
Trevor feels very humbled to have created this space where people are able to emote and to express themselves. In this day and age especially, SingSnap has become a safe haven and positive place to go for people of all ages while other social media platforms experience a large amount of hatred and negativity.
Any SingSnap staff member will be quick to tell you about all of the stories shared through the last 15 years about how SingSnap has changed peoples' lives for the better. In 2016 at a SingSnap meet up in Nashville, Trevor says that multiple people approached him telling him how the site had saved their lives, and how they were feeling very low until they found SingSnap.
"This is surely a message to the world too, because people forget how lonely it can be for people; even those who are married or in a relationship otherwise where they're feeling shut out or cold and then they find SingSnap and are able to create new relationships that don't make them feel like that." - Trevor
When asked what he feels the biggest change is comparing today's SingSnap to when it first started over 15 years ago, Trevor says that he doesn't recognize all of the members anymore like he used to because of the growth the platform has experienced. That being said, he still sees members that he knows have been around since the very beginning! Early on, Trevor wasn't sure where the platform was going but today he knows that he wants to continue bringing joy to the world and continuing to connect people through harmony.
