It's time for our next installment of 'This Day in Music History'! Let's turn back the clock and check out what news was hitting the front page on this day!

1959 - Johnny and the Moondogs ...

Did you know that Johnny and the Moondogs played in the 'TV Star Search' competition in Manchester, England on this day in 1959? The next year they changed their name to something much more memorable - The Beatles!

1964 - Brian Jones ...

Lead guitarist of the Stones was admitted into the Passavant Hospital with a raging fever of 105. The performer was unable to make the remaining dates of the current tour.

1965 - The Rolling Stones ...

The Rolling Stones landed on television screens across the USA with their TV debut on Hullabaloo, a series that ran on NBC. The band performed the hit ‘Get Off Of My Cloud’.

1969 - Janis Joplin ...

Janis Joplin found herself behind bars after getting into a verbal argument with a police officer. Joplin's fans were forced back to their seats and Joplin didn't like it! She left the stage and confronted the police officer but did eventually get released on $504 bail.

1969 - Carpenters ...

The Carpenters released their debut album which ended up being a commercial failure with only one minor hit single, a ballad version of the Beatles tune "Ticket To Ride"

1980 - Blondie ...

Blondie's epic hit "The Tide his High", written by reggae singer John Holt, hit No 1 in the USA!

1987 - Dire Straits ...

Dire Straits became the first band to make history in the UK, selling over three million copies of an album.

1992 - Ozzy Osbourne ...

Ozzy Osbourne announced he was retiring from touring in California, after a gig.

2002 - UK Music Industry ...

In an effort to restore credibility to the Top 40 Charts, the UK Music industry included digital download as part of the singles chart.

2007 - Jay-Z ...

Jay-Z soared to the top when his epic album 'American Gangster' hit the charts at No 1. This was his 10th No 1 album which put him along side the King of Rock N Roll, Elvis Presley, with the most No 1 albums.

2016 - Mose Allison ...

The highly talented jazz and blues pianist, singer and songwriter passes away at the age of 89. His music was noted as influencing many prominent artists such as Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.
