Have you ever found yourself completely in awe of someone else's singing voice and wishing you were "as good" as them? Well, you're definitely not alone. Everyone experiences this feeling at some point in their lives especially in the age of social media, but it's very important to remember that we're all very unique from each other and that we all have our own talents and specialities that separate us from the rest. That being said, the next time you're feeling a little down and out about your singing voice, turn that feeling into motivation to improve! After all, practice makes perfect.
First of all, we'd like to remind everyone that SingSnap is a place to create and to have fun. Whether you're a trained singer or someone who just likes to blow off some steam every once in a while, talent most definitely isn't required and FUN is the most important part of being on our platform!
Let's get into it!
One
Remember to breathe!
If you've ever played an instrument before, you'll understand that if you don't know how to properly use it, chances are your performance will suffer. It's the same when it comes to your voice! When you sing, you may fill yourself up with air vertically instead of horizontally; which results in your shoulders moving. This means that a good amount of that valuable air has travelled into your shoulders, which has absolutely no use to you! Always remember to breathe through your diaphragm, which you'll find will fuel your voice much better!
Two
Warm up and cool down.
Athletes and singers aren't so different after all! We all know how important it is for athletes to warm up and cool down, but did you know that doing so with your voice can make a huge improvement in your performance skills too? Next time you go to record on SingSnap, spend a little bit of time warming up beforehand. This can include breathing, voicing and articulation excercises! A cool down typically consists of what are called "vocal folds"! Backstage does a fantastic job at sharing all the warm up and cool down secrets. Be sure to take a look at their informative article here!
Three
Heads up!
The importance of proper posture is another very important factor sure to have a measureable difference in the quality of your voice! Try positioning your head perfectly in line with your torso instead of being slightly in front and if you're standing, it's also recommended to have your feet shoulder width apart.
Four
Relax! You got this.
Although this tip more so applies to in-person performances, when you first start singing on SingSnap it can be a little bit strange to be recording yourself singing in a new and interesting way! Nerves and anxiety can cause your throat to squeeze, tighten and maybe even choke up. Make sure you take a moment to breathe and relax if you feel as if this might happen to you during your performance or recording! You got this, we both know you're an AWESOME performer.
Five
So, what's your range?
Once you're feeling confident in your breathing skills, it's time to see just what that incredible voice is capable of! Have you heard of the terms soprano, alto, tenor and bass before? If not, on average these are the 4 major voice ranges for men and women. You'll be able to figure out what exactly your voice can do VERY easily, by paying attention whenever your throat is starting to feel uncomfortable during a song! In short, the better you know your voice the better you'll know what songs will fit your range best. Music Grotto has a fantastic article about some great techniques to figure out what the name of your range is!
To conclude we've said it before and we'll say it again, but we can't stress enough how important it is to HAVE FUN while singing. All of these tips are fantastic to incorporate next time you go to sing on our app or perform, but above all else make sure you're singing from the heart and having an awesome time while doing it!
