Good Sportsmanship is Important!
Sportsmanship is not isolated to athletic events. When it comes to a singing contest, good sportsmanship is just as important as it is in any other competitive activity. Should you consider entering a contest in the future; here are some tips for exhibiting good sportsmanship:
Respect your fellow competitors: Just like in any sport, it's important to show respect for your fellow competitors. This means refraining from negative comments or actions that may put others down. Consider your words and whether they have a negative tone or direction. Your goal should be to focus on encouraging and supporting your fellow singers. Remember, if you complain about the results - you're basically saying someone else is less deserving and that just make you look bad - not them.
Follow the rules: Every contest has its own set of rules, and it's important to abide by them. When your hosts/judges outline specific guidelines, it is of utmost importance you stick to them. Breaking or bending the rules is not a sign of good sportsmanship and should definitely be avoided.
Be gracious in both victory and defeat: If you win the contest, be humble and gracious in your victory. Congratulate your fellow competitors and thank the judges and organizers. On the other hand, if you don't win, accept the outcome gracefully and congratulate the winner. There is a lot to be said for those who take the high road and show their appreciation for both the competitors and the hosts.
Avoid criticism or negative comments: If you don't agree with the judges' decision or don't like someone else's performance, keep your negative comments to yourself. Criticizing others will only reflect poorly on you and may hurt someone else's feelings. It is very easy to sit by and say a judge is playing favorites or a performer has an edge but it is not always easy to self-reflect. Do it anyways as it will make you both a better person and display top notch sportsmanship!
Have fun: Remember, singing contests are meant to be fun and enjoyable. Focus on doing your best and having a good time, rather than just winning the contest. By exhibiting good sportsmanship, you'll not only make the experience more enjoyable for yourself, but also for everyone else involved!
