My idea was that I wanted to be one of the party guests that sang. After several years of piano lessons, I refused to go to my piano lesson and said I wanted to take voice lessons. To my mom's credit, she saw the writing on the wall and found a voice teacher that lived fairly close to us and made an appointment for an evaluation.

I was 12 but the teacher told us from the beginning that she never had students younger than 16 but she would see us and give us some suggestions. I sang "Feed the Birds" from Mary Poppins. The teacher, Doris Labovitz, changed her mind and said I could start the next week. I was her pupil until I left for college.

I chose this song because it is one of three that we began working on at the first lesson. All three had jumps so we could work on smooth singing.

By being able to learn how to do what I had wanted to do, I then loved to practise. In fact, I had to be forced to stop to go to bed on many nights.
