The song was featured in the 2000 movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?

It's a standard of the bluegrass genre, which is one of my favorites.

The song was first published in 1913 by the blind folk singer Richard Burnett, though it is uncertain if he was the actual songwriter, but his life did share a striking similarity with the subject of the song, having been blinded in a robbery-turned-shooting and spending the rest of his life as a wandering musician.

The song was popularized by The Stanley Brothers, who recorded the song in the 1950s; many other singers recorded versions in the 1960s, most notably by Bob Dylan. Variations of the song have also been recorded under the titles of "Girl of Constant Sorrow" by Joan Baez, "Maid of Constant Sorrow" by Judy Collins, and "Sorrow" by Peter, Paul and Mary. It was released as a single by Ginger Baker's Air Force with vocals by Denny Laine.

In the aforementioned film, the song is sung by The Soggy Bottom Boys, a group made up for the movie with George Clooney as one of the members. In the film, the group sang the song twice, first in a radio station with acoustic guitar backup and then on stage during a political campaign dinner. The real singing voice was that of Dan Tyminski from the band Union Station (led by Alison Krauss). The recording won a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards in 2002.

The backing track is from my CS.
