<ul><li>One of the last Beatles songs, Paul McCartney wrote "The Long And Winding Road" based on tensions within the band, which was approaching their breakup.</li><li><br></li><li>"It's a sad song because it's all about the unattainable," he said in the book <em>Many Years From Now</em>. "The door you never quite reach. This is the road that you never get to the end of."</li><li>The winding road is metaphorical, of course, but there was a real one that inspired McCartney: The B842, which runs down the east coast of Kintyre and on into Campbeltown near his Scottish farmhouse. "I have always found inspiration in the calm beauty of Scotland and again it proved the place where I found inspiration," he explained.</li><li>When McCartney started writing this song at his piano in Scotland, he imagined someone else singing it, perhaps Ray Charles.
