π Manic Monday Challenge Details : Part B: Er, I think the title of the song says it all!

A song from 1979. Boomtown Rats leader singer Bob Geldof got the idea for the song while doing a radio interview in Atlanta. During the interview a telex machine next to Geldof typed out details of a shooting at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California as they happened. The title of the song comes from the shooter's response to being called by a reporter from The Evening Tribune, who had been calling random telephone numbers in the neighborhood. The shooter, a pupil at the school, told the reporter she had shot at the school children and adults because, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day.". In later years, Geldof stated that he regretted writing the song because he made the shooter famous.

The song reached No.1 in Australia, Ireland, South Africa and the UK. Top 10 in much of Europe, No.3 in New Zealand and No.4 in Canada. Understandably less popular in the US, No.73 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On a happier note, and with the 40th anniversary of Live Aid coming up on 13th July, this song was performed by The Boomtown Rats at that event in 1985. The band's final major appearance. On singing the line, "And the lesson today is how to die", Geldof stopped the song in its tracks and remained motionless for 20 seconds while the crowd applauded the significance to those starving in Africa that Live Aid was intended to help.

The background image is a still from the official video of the song.
