<p>This is for the Paint Your Life In Song contest. Cardigan is important to my life because wordplay is very important to me. It's the perfect intersection of my love of making music and my love of studying literature. When the lyrics say "you put me on and said I was your favorite," "put me on" refers to actually wearing the sweater, but also to the expression "put me on" meaning the ex-boyfriend in the song was lying. It's fun to figure out double meanings in poems/lyrics, and also painful when someone says something to you that can mean two things. It's a bittersweet song. </p><p><br></p><p>I feel drawn to singing sad songs, even when I'm happy. As a character in True Stories,one of my favorite movies, once said, "I love sad songs. They make me want to lie on the floor."</p>
