I find that when I don't know a song well and I really like the groove, I will just sing it my way. I figure if I can hear the notes that I'm singing somewhere on the track, then it's fair game. LOL I find myself doing it a lot with blues and jazz. I think those genre were meant to be sung however the singer is feeling it at the time. Many different artists have sung the songs in those genre and each artist can sing it completely different. In fact, one artist can sing a song differently each time he or she sings it. That is evident in the jazz and blues songs that I have recorded multiple times.
