“500 Miles” Versions

The song was written originally by Hedy West, in 1961. West mentioned that the song was inspired by her grandmother. However, West cannot remember the exact lyrics of the song so she had to change some parts of the song. The song became one of the most popular folk revival songs. The first band to record the song was the Journeymen, but the song gained more recognition in 1962. When the song was recorded by Paul, Peter, and Mary the song was noticed. In 1963, Bobby Bare recorded the song in his own version. He changed the lyrics and added a monologue.

Bare’s version peaked at No. 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1963.
