Really? The trains are faster here in Hollywood? Whoa. I better pop up to the subway station (next to where they give out them Oscars - thunk, place-name-drop ) and salute the red line as it goes Downtown, North Hollywood, Downtown, North Hollywood, and, well, I could go on. It would cost a $1.30. The gold line (downtown to Pasadena) is notorious for having to drop its speed to 20 mph as it passes through some communities.

Now, if it were me, I could never let the line "Wichita, a Mayberry town," live into the final draft. If there's no difference between North Carolina and southern Kansas, then there's no difference between any two places. Of course, "Mayberry" was a studio back lot. The weekly walk with Opie to the fishin' hole were actors in the Hollywood Hills, and when they needed to return to Mayberry, they chose Los Olivos, on the other side of the Santa Ynez mountains from Santa Barbara.

So, since a Hollywood manufactured stereotype appears in the first verse and is the essence of the second verse, I'm going to suggest you guilty of perpetuating SoCal myths, unless you performed this while wearing overalls on the John Deere. Which would actually be kinda cool.

Since Dan wrote enough for both of us, I'll just say nice job, Kansas. Oops. Does this mean I gotta start calling ya Susan? JK!

Like the pic. Are you all about truth in advertising?

Malva and Diane, thanks for popping by and leaving a comment!

DannyO, unless California is all downhill, I can't imagine that the trains are faster there. Thank you for the public transport info...I won't need to rent a car on my next trip there!

Love the "Mayberry" trivia! My mom was a big fan of the show, and I guess it rubbed off a bit. If we assume the lyricist meant "Mayberry" as a concept rather than physical location, there are more than a few little towns around here that fit the bill.

I'll have to enter a guilty plea to the charge of myth perpetuation. I did not record the song while wearing my overalls on my John Deere, while hunting buffalo and chasing tornadoes. To be honest, I have worn overalls and sat on a John Deere (but not simultaneously), can see buffalo at the local zoo or a nearby game preserve, and have heard the tornado sirens at least once this spring.

Which brings me to MsTake - indeed, I AM for truth in advertising, but that's not what I'm ALL about - that would be the hokey pokey. You can call me Susan, just don't call me stupid. (Attempted allusion: "A Fish Called Wanda.")

Thanks to each of you for listening and taking some time out of your day to leave a thought behind!

What about Alf Landon and Bob Dole? OK, I'm showing my political side. And all those sunflowers? And jayhawks? Were they talking about Missouri when they were saying "they've gone about as fer as they kin go"?

Anyhow, it's a beautiful sing for which all of us folks from elsewhere are grateful.

I left out tornados, didn't I? And my father's cousin in Kingman!

Haha! Nanaimo...thanks for exposing your "political side." Quite impressive! I believe Gary Hart even lived here for a time. Sam Brownback would be our most recent presidential hopeful. Though President Obama has his own ties to the state (El Dorado). But who can compare with your father's cousin in Kingman? (Talk about a Mayberry kind of town!)

DannyO - how very peculiar! Makes a person wonder why a state would bother with hills at all???

Thank you gentlemen - you've added joy to my day!

Actually, I've never paid a visit to Kingman, though your description makes it sound charming. So I could park out at the local diner and sip coffee all day and get the news on all the county's news? Or would I BE the county's news if I turned up? That sounds a bit full of myself. I'd probably only really qualify to be the county's news if you and I and Danny O pulled up a microphone and did a jam session for our fellow diners. That would be fun.

That just might do it, Nanaimo. I checked the Kingman Leader-Courier website. (I had to dig a little to find out if they had a newspaper.) They have a circulation of about 3,000. (Not unlike the last guy I dated.) So, that's nothing to sneeze at. I checked the headlines to see if your idea could compete...

"Cleland McBurney gave the key-note address at Walnut Hill cemetery on Memorial Day, 2009. Mr. McBurney gave an outstanding history of U.S. wars as well as the history of the Memorial Day ceremony site at Walnut Hill."

"Breck Knoblauch took 1st place in the discus throw at Regional competition. He will next compete at the State Meet on Saturday, May 30th. The State Track and Field Meet is held at Wichita State University and Knoblauch will be throwing at around 1:15 p.m."

Kingman County has fewer than 8,000 residents. I live in a county of about 65,000. It's easy to be a big fish in a little pond. I poke fun, but I admire the strong, small communities of Kansas. There's some hard working, determined folks in these parts! Good luck Mr. Knoblauch!

Is 3,000 their estimated readership or the number of subscriptions plus new stands sales? (And why would I expect you to know?) That is very impressive. I believe there was a major league ball player in 80s with a last name of Knoblauch. One wonders if this could be a son or nephew. One marvels at the chain of events. A young man in a small community decides that discus will be his speciality and practices and practices. I gather the school coach was sympathetic and supportive and able to help the athlete develop. And here we are, because of a pop song on a karaoke site, shining a spotlight of sorts on the youngster.

I believe that there are 3000 purchases of the weekly paper both subscription and as you city slickers say "news stands sales" though I'm guessing the closest thing to a newstand is the stack on the counter at Casey's General Store.
Judging by the build of Mr. Knoblauch, I'm guessing that he played every sport offered. There are hundreds of smaller communities than Kingman in Kansas. Most of the kids in the smaller schools participate in everything. My cousin was in a class of 28 people...every guy was on the football team. You're not just in it for the game or for your school, you're representing your town. But you're right, you never know what bit of info is going to take-off thanks to the internet!

I'm back for my reply and I get ALL THIS???? Wow. Research on Kingman? Yikes, Alicia, the better I know you the more I'm thinking you are included in my Weezer dedication. :) That would make a total of 3 members on this feedback trail who are. On the UP side, you can be devastatingly funny. :) On top of a good sing--now THAT'S Value Added.

I think perhaps that boyfriend with the large circulatory system deserves a dedication. Or perhaps he was the one who left you just when you needed him most. Ho ho.

Yes, I'm a geek, but let's get the record straight. It wasn't JUST Kingman research. I made reference to one the best movies of the last half of the middle third of the fourth quarter of the last century. As proof, I offer a quote:

Otto: Don't call me stupid...Apes don't read philosophy.
Wanda: Yes they do, Otto. They just don't understand it. Now let me correct you on a couple of things, OK? Aristotle was not Belgian. The central message of Buddhism is not "Every man for himself." And the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked them up.

Now, concerning "that" boyfriend. He definately did not leave when I needed him most - no one needs "that". Cruel, but true. And stop calling me a ho.

Thank you for the compliments. I'm glad you can find humor in my comments. If there's anything I like as much as music, it's laughter. And chocolate. Maybe a shoe sale. But that's it, I think. Oh, and babies. It's definately on the top ten list, though.

If I throw a shoe at one of my babies is that twice the fun? Kidding. Supermom derides again. :)

Thanks for visiting my Weezer and filling my tub today. You are indeed a wunderkind.

Jamie was so acerbic in that! Now she writes kids books and touts pro-biotic yogurt. Great movie, A Fish Called Wanda. It's been years since I've seen it, too long actually, maybe I should rent it again. But John Cleese lives here in town now (Montecito actually, along with Oprah, Rob Lowe, Dennis Miller, etc.) and he's pretty active in the community. I was a Monty Python addict growing up. It's kinda weird when legends enter the land of the living. Ach!

John Cleese AND Rob Lowe??? Colour me jealous!

I was a member of the Monty Python club in high school. The organization was disorganized. We only voted once, and that was to decide not to vote on anything for that year. Membership was lifelong, but we did nothing and we were very good at it.

Please, do not throw a shoe at your baby. It only looks like fun. Trick or bribe an older kid into babysitting, then go try on shoes. That's the start of fun.
