I, like Michael J Fox, have Parkinson’s. I was diagnosed several years ago, and what many people don’t understand is it affects everything including speech. My last years working were in sales and most of it over the phone. My voice was starting to get weaker. I was starting to have some difficulty speaking (finding words), and had lost the ability to sing many of the songs I loved. I spoke to my doctor who wanted to refer me for therapy. I felt if I did something I loved I would do more of it. We had karaoke in our home for years and I decided to sing instead. At this point in my life, I worked from my home. When my wife left for work, I would put headphones on so I could hear the music, but would not use a mike. For one hour I just sang at the top of my voice. I would pick songs out of my range to force my vocal cords. (Lost a couple neighbors in the process) but it worked, my voice has become stronger.

I did not put this up looking for pity comments (ok..throw a couple in if it will make you feel better) But to maybe help someone who may be facing this, or have a friend in the same situation. The ability to speak is something most of us take for granted, until we start to lose it ourselves.

I truly believe we are given many gifts in life. The ability to “enjoy” singing is one of them..so many people just don’t try and miss so much in life. I find singing very uplifting when you need it. Although I can't quite get some of the high notes in songs anymore, ( I am also, starting to get a little older ) I still have a good time.

Since I drive very little, I don’t listen to much music. I sing a lot of the songs based on the rhythm of the music..Because of this, sometimes it is a little different (my "wife says" sometimes a lot different) from the original.

I am married 21 years to my other half (better). We have been blessed with 3 children and 7 grandchildren from 3 to 20 yrs. Everyone in our family loves to sing, and several are quite good. (They don't take after Dad!) Our large family gatherings are many times centered around singing. We have many nephews and cousins who could record, or are recording, including our second cousins David and Howard, also know as the Bellamy Bros. I am surrounded by country singers and love the music and I wish I could do the music justice...Most of my family on my Mothers side are farmers or ranchers..real Fla cowboys, for generations. My Father was From Montana and I grew up in the business world...I never developed much of the country accents of the family that surrounded me.. I can sing country songs but I don't have the true sound...My nephew say's I am a City Slicker Redneck..:) Some people think i can sing, and some people think not..they both may be right.. I sing because deep inside I love it….I hope you will too. Because it is sometimes difficult for me to write , I sometimes use a generic statement..My feelings expressed are meant for you personally and are my true feelings, or I would not be leaving it.

I am very glad I found this community and I have to say I am in awe of the shear number of comments I am receiving. Such beautiful and heart felt feelings you are expressing. I am so thankful and appreciative for every one of them.

I am not a writer, however I am working on two books ( I think they have a word for that )…I use dictation software, so it is like thinking out load..May take years, just a little each day, but it gives me a long term goal. “Fall To The Top” This is the story of my life and how in the bleakest times when I felt there was no where to go and nothing left…the bottom, God reached down, gave me new life and took me where I had never been…I may post some of this sometime..May help a lot of people….The other one is the .. “Art of conversational Sales” Ok...now please go listen to some music before you change your mind
