“The Elvis Presley culture will not die,” Morin said.
That culture lives on in large part because of the countless people who appear at events and perform on stage as Presley. There are young Elvises and Vegas Elvises. There’s no denying these performers bring kitsch to an extreme, but there’s also no denying the enjoyment they bring Presley fans.
Denny Curtis, 34, is obviously too young to fully remember Presley’s death, but his parents’ playing of Elvis records influenced him early on. Today, Curtis performs as the sleek looking Elvis of 1968. His physical stature wouldn’t allow him to be any other Elvis.
“I’m 150 pounds, so I’m a small guy,” said Curtis, a Salem resident. “People picture Elvis coming out as a big bloated guy in a white jump suit. But I stick with the younger Elvis. That’s who Elvis was.”
Curtis’ dead-on singing of Presley tunes earned him the nickname “The King’s Voice,” he said. He has performed as Presley in Las Vegas, Toronto, Baltimore and Washington D.C.
“Elvis has taken me many places that I never would have been on my own,” Curtis said.
