"It is the nail which sticks up which gets pounded back down." I was a child performer from the ages of 4 to about 12, but gave it up when I hit junior high and caved to social pressure not to stand out too much. In high school I re-entered band, choir, and acting, and fell in love with jazz and gospel music. That love affair lasted until, in college, I grew polyps on my vocal cords and couldn't sing for the better part of a decade. I went back to singing, but it was too soon and the opera was very demanding on my voice, so of course I re-injured myself. I'm only just barely getting some singing ability back.

It's hard to have lost what I remember as being an extremely good voice with a huge range, great agility, and strength. It's immodest to say so, I know, but as it's in the past and can't be regained, perhaps you'll forgive me for reminiscing about my golden years with the "golden" voice. At this stage of my life, I've had to acknowledge that I won't be getting back to a singing career. For one thing, retraining my voice would take an expert vocal coach, which I just can't afford, and a lot of time which I just don't have now that I'm having to earn a living from something other than singing.

Even so, I can't just stop singing. I just can't do it for ten or twelve hours a day I like I used to do. And what can I say -- I don't sing in the back of a closet where no one can hear me. Singing is wonderful and amazing, even when no one's listening, but in truth, it's meant to be heard. A singer needs an audience. Thank you for being mine.
