It's great when you meet someone like Les Round (roundy) on Singsnap who is such a talented musician; having been a musician all his life.

Les took a very lengthy poem that I wrote; Toy Soldier and the Sea and set it to music! I was honored that he offered to do that, and I was so pleased with the outcome; rich with his singing and instruments he plays throughout.

Thanks so much Les for doing this. It was so nice of you, and so enjoyable to hear. It reminds me of one of those long songs they used to sing; tall tales or sad stories around a camp fire....adding a bit more here and there as they went, but keeping the same tune throughout.

NOTE: SCROLL DOWN DEEP INTO THE WATER TO FIND THE WORDS OF THE POEM FLOATING UPWARD! THEN, SCROLL UP OR DOWN TO KEEP IN SYNC WITH THE WORDS COMING UP.

Toy Soldier and the Sea
by George Baker (Aardvarkbark) - U.S.
Music by Les Round (Roundy) - Australia
Isn't technology, Singsnap, and friendship just wonderful!
.
With his fingers so cold, he could no longer hold
the toy soldier that fell from his hand.
And it tumbled below where the mermaids all go,
to protect all who sleep in the sand.
.
And his poor mother sighed; telling him as he cried,
"He's protecting all those in the deep.
He's a hero like you, and will always come through,
and will be by their side when they sleep."
.
Oh, the years numbered long as the waves rolled along
in their endless trek far overhead.
But in darkness beneath, with his sword and his sheath,
the toy soldier stood brave in his stead.
.
Then a flash in the night was so blindingly bright.
Was it cannons or bombs in the dark?
And again, and again, it lit up his bronze skin,
"Oh what evil is this?" he remarked.
.
Two large eyes ventured in a few inches from him
and they blinked at him standing so tall.
Though he held his sword tight, he could not quell his fright,
for those eyes made him feel very small.
.
With a whir and a whine, the two eyes swished behind,
and they lit up an image ahead.
An old ship-wreck was there with debris everywhere,
lying broken, and silent, and dead.
.
And he stared there in awe at the sight that he saw
while his little tears mixed with the sea.
Just a toy in the deep; sunken ship, souls at sleep,
but a place he was destined to be.
.
Then a grip 'round his vest clamped across his small chest
and he flew up so far, far away,
where an endless blue sky and big clouds drifting by
welcomed him to a bright, summer day.

Quite a distance from there; Mediplex - Eldercare,
in a room full of beeping displays,
an old man laid impaired, while his vitals declared
he was living his last precious days.
.
As his family drew near, the full life he held dear
was all slipping away like the tide.
At a hundred years old, he again proudly told
how his mother and he had survived.
.
Though the lifeboat sustained, he recalled with much pain
when his soldier fell over the side.
With his father on deck, going down with the wreck
they just watched, and they hugged, and they cried.
.
Now, his son looked at him; at his eyes growing dim
and he placed a bronze toy in his hand.
Nevermore would he roam; the toy soldier came home
from a place where he once took a stand.
.
The old man shook his head as his son softly said
how they found him still guarding the way.
"And we told them that you and our grandmother too
were the ones who had lost him that day."
.
But a look in old eyes caught them all by surprise
as he held up the toy and replied,
"Put him back! He's not done! He protects everyone!"
Then he took his last breath and he died.

*****

On a late summer day; a small ship underway;
up on deck all were gathered around,
to release to the wind, precious ashes of him
at the spot where the ship had gone down.
.
Then together as one, there beneath setting sun,
a toy soldier slipped out of their hands.
And it tumbled below where the mermaids all go,
to protect all who sleep in the sand.
