hiya rosieposy! thats a good question! but you will get lots of different answers to.lol..you see evetone is different...the best i had is my shure sm 58.......but some folks swear by the shure pg mic! there are condenser mics that some folks prefer! you best bet might be to go to a website selling mics they should explain about different types..

just go to RadioShack and they have some really nice ones that are around $45 and also the $20 works really good also i have both ;) NOW when you do this your going to have to go into your settings and turn off the Webcam one because if its like mine they fight lol but im also using a PV10 USB mixer...
You know what Rosie...for some folks it's easy because they 'get it'. I don't. I've asked about mics for 2 years and haven't commited to a good one (over $15) yet because of indecision and confusion. I wish someone would just say 'get this one'. Lol. And blaza...your mic doesn't sound like a Walmart mic....not like the one I had anyways. There must be something else to your equipment. I've been getting into using ribbon microphones lately. They have an incredible warmth to the sound that doesn't require much processing.
The one I've been using is the Nady RSM 4.
Difference with ribbons. They use a ribbon of aluminum suspended between two magnets. When air pressure hits the ribbon, it vibrates, causing electromagnetic currents, resulting in a very pure sound.
Here's a song I recorded with the ribbon:
http://www.singsnap.com/snap/watchandlisten/play/bb1272c63
Here's a link to it on Musician's Friend:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Nady-RSM4-Ribbon-Studio-Microphone?sku=277107
Link to some reviews of the various ribbon mics that Nady makes:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document/nady/ribbon_microphones?doc_id=100237
They can be a little fragile, but if you follow the guidelines for taking care of them, ribbon mics have incredible sound.

It can be kind of confusing Deedle. I think the only reason someone doesn't say "Get this one" is because what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another. Also, when you get into it, there are other pieces of equipment people have. Sound card, mixing board, effects processors, etc. etc.
My personal preference is toward Nady mics because they are not only inexpensive (a big plus in my book), but they sound great.
However, if you want a good sound without worrying about the maintenance that goes along with condensor and ribbon mics, I say go for a dynamic mic. People recommend the Shure SM58, but it's pricy. For half the price, go with Digital Reference DR-VX1.
