In most cases I like to have the backing vocals, but i could certainly see going with a no backing track recording and then adding your own harmonies.
Also, there are some of the broadway selections that are actually ensamble numbers but the manufaturer squeezed it into a duet format - meaning that only two vocal parts are left to be sung. If you have some friends and want to do your own ensamble version,, not having backing tracks will allow you to do that.

May I ask why many of the new songs now are without backing vocals? Is this going to be the way most of the new songs are released now?

I think it depends on which manufacturer is making the songs...personally, backing singers drive me nuts, so I'm quite glad when they don't appear!
