I've been able to sing at a bar and in the car, but I seem to be nervous singing in my apartment. During the day most of my neighbors seem to be gone, but I'm not sure if I'm being shy (more then likely shy I think) or afraid they will complain. Does anybody have any tips, or have a similar situation?
Oh, I'm don't drink at the bar by the way, so that's not it lol.
yep....we have a three bands that play in a garage just a few feet away from our house...with our windows open or closed...you can hear them really well....like...heavy metal....hmmmmmm
but your singing should not be too bad during the day....just dont blast the aparment building out...then you will probably be fine...and hey...if someone complains, then you will know...cant know without trying...
As long as you are not breaking noise restriction rules i say go wild.
I used to have fun annoying my neighbours and continue to do so in my new place. Also having a good mic is always helpful, that way when you dont need to scream it out you dont have to.
Have fun with it, and if they do complain, well introduce them to snap...they'll get addicted, you'll all be singing your hearts out and everyone will be in the same boat.
Whiskey is trying to get some work done, it isn't going well!!!
I live in an apartment and I just use the headphones and mic set and so no one hears anything but my singing if that. No one has said a word the entire time since I have joined SS and trust me my neighbors would have said *something* if they were uptight about. I sing at all hours of the day and night and unless your walls are paper thin they probably won't even notice. During the daytime I will sometimes fire up the big karaoke set-up and blast a few walls but I usually reserve that for parties or special events. Just have a good time!!
bipolarbetty married life...is mighty fine...and so are the perks...*wink*
Tips on (after 10 pm) recordings during the work week:
1. Use a headset
2. Avoid using too much bass at night, because it may not be very loud to you, but your amp or sound system will reverberate through the walls and seem louder than it is just based on vibrations.
3. Pick songs that are unplugged, acoustic, sing a capella, or sing with a solo instrument, like the Singsnap band sometimes has.
4. Avoid songs with synthesized backtracks with too many instruments blended on it.
5. Avoid recordings with lots of harmony, or loud backup singers on the backtrack, because you'll tend to sing louder on top of them, and the noise through the walls will sound like, loud, softer, louder, etc. when you hit the chorus.
THIS IS FOR WEEK NIGHTS, NIGHT TIME SINGING ONLY.
But heck, sing anything you like during the day, or on weekend nights.
bipolarbetty married life...is mighty fine...and so are the perks...*wink*
This member has many acoustic (instrumental only) songs to record with, and it is significantly softer sounding through the walls than a whole rock band blasting.
Cheekylilvixen soo tired,it hurts 2 smile.plz ask 4 help @ next counter lol ;)
I used to live in an Apartment. During the day, they didn't have a problem cuz I wear headphones and all they could hear was my voice. Back then I wasn't on SS, so most of my singing was on Paltalk and there were 30 minutes between each song lol. Tho they only complained when my roommate got to singing. Their dog would howl LOL. Sorry, but she could not sing for her dinner lol. I knew a guy who made his own little sound booth for his apartment. He sound proofed it and he could wail at all hours of the night with no complaints lol. So, just let go and test the waters. If your neighbors complain, then either don't sing at night or just lower your voice to a level they can live with :)
Thanks everyone, I'm going to try again. I seem to just stay at whispering in the apartment, even though I don't sing like that in other places. I'll keep on practicing until I become more comfortable with it.
I don't think I'm afraid of the neighbors complaining about my voice, since I've been told I have a nice voice by many other people. I think I'm just nervous about them complaining period, though we will see what happens!
Well, you need to post a song and then we can tell you if we'd think you were an annoying neighbor, lol.
Seriously, I'd worry less about it than I would having a stereo on. And, like some have said, if you use a headset, at most they'll just hear your voice. Shouldn't be a problem.
I'm currently adjusting the sound on my iMac, there was a problem with an echo (probably also background noise, don't have a mic yet), but I have it fixed I think.
Weeeeeeelllll, I simply ignore my neighbours :) My neigbour in the flat upstairs has her bedroom above my study, so she can't escape, and sometimes in the mornings she's able to tell me what I sang the evening before...lol
Just use a headset, sing the loudest songs in the day and don't worry, there are worse hobbies! *wink*
I live in an apartment and at first I was shy about it, didn't want to disturb anyone. I finally got over it, and nobody has complained. (I check). Maybe it's because they all know they have noise issues too! (leadfooted 5 year olds, playing their music too loud) LOL!
LadyMatika is hoping everybody had an awesome 4th of july weekend ;)
i walk into my room and close the door to where my computer is put headphones on and attezo is right the music does sound better with headphones and i just sing my heart out but I don't sing any more after 11 cause of my roomies one of them happens to be my dad lol and he gets up at 7 am to go have coffee with his buddies down at the cogo's gas station since he retired but other than that they leave me alone i leave them alone if i'm too loud they turn up the tv :) I try not to be though but sometimes I try to sing a Houston or Heart and i have to go a little bit louder than usual . but they aren't complaining :)
Okay, I tried it on here and on my Quicktime, and it sounds much better on Quicktime. It seems to get distorted when I use Singsnap, but I have an Intel iMac. Does anybody have any suggestions, or should I wait until I get a microphone?
I think I figured it out, but I can't use the headphones. And yes, every few seconds I still whisper, and somewhat later I'm fine. I'm going to try and wait to make a recording until I stop whispering as much.
The title of this thread really made me giggle. I, too, used to live in an apartment and this was long before I discovered online karaoke.. but I did love to turn on some music and belt it out while I ran around and did my tidying up. Until the day my girls came home from school and told me they could hear me all the way down at the front doors. I went to the manager and asked if anyone had ever complained about me and he said no, but as he lived in the apt next to mine, he enjoyed his free concerts every day. My face was beet red! I had never really considered it very much (as I mostly did my singing clean-up during the daytime, when everyone else was making lots of noise too) and I never realized my voice would carry so far. It still makes me laugh to think about it!
I guess there's no real way around it... shared living spaces equal shared noise. If you keep it well within noise restriction guidelines, you're doing just fine. That of course does not cure the embarrassment of being overheard... I hope you come to realize, there's worse things to overhear than even the worst-sung karaoke song ever. I bet most would just smile and keep on moving... don't be ashamed to sing!
Despite all my wise advice (ahem) what's really funny is... we live in a house now, with a basement computer room, and I'm more cautious with my singing than ever. Every window MUST be closed! So I feel ya.

im in the same boat as u alleray.lol..wht i did though was see the neighbours and get too know em abit..and ask if u can do a sound check maybe,,i did this,,went in the flat above me while blarrin elvis out...one lads bedroom is above me pc,3 people live in tht flat..all lads in there 20s..they said do wht i want ,,but its still in me head they have got there head on the floor listenin too me,lol...im dyin too let go but cant,lol...they had some really hard core music on the other day,,i could hear it..but only slightly..i went out side and blimey they had it on full,,lol...as there window was open..i went back in and it was only slight again..i use headphones all the time..so if anything they might here me screamin slightly,,its just lettin go which im findin it hard too,lol...i think there is a false ceilin and maybe thts helping...why dont u knock on there door and do the test?then u will know,..be braver than me,lol..
It's good to know that other people have similar problems that I do. Hopefully I'll get over it and I'll try to post something soon.
Ms Destiny, I understand, I've been told by numerous people I have a pretty voice but I still whisper once I'm in my apartment. Hopefully I will get better with practice.

Attezo sang a special song on 6th july.... :))I started to record through headphones, sound sounds better, and the only 'noise' neighbours hear is my voice since its through headphones! LOL
I respect hours restrictions though. If i decide to sing i do it between 10am-1pm.....4pm-10pm

They may even treat it as a free concert!
I don't get a word said to me by my neighbours, and I'm sometimes singing at 6 in the morning...and I use speakers, not a headset.
Just have fun, take it easy, and wait and see what happens!
