The original idea for this contest was to have 100 blue members join with the gold prize as a target. We we reached 50 which is still a good number but because this number is reduced, I do not see the need for making any cuts at this stage.
So for round 1, I would like you to sing a song from any genre released between 1980 and 1989. When you put the song up for the judges please add, in your introduction to the song , some news item relating to the year that your chosen song was released.(within the song comments not here on the message board),
So, for example, if you sing a song from 1982 I would like to read something in your comments section relating to a newsworthy story from 1982.
Please note that no harmonised, pre-records or duets are allowed and I will be very strict on later submissions. Any song not submitted by the cut off date will result in disqualification for the contestant. So get your songs done early in case something happens to you internet connection or whatever!
You will be judged not only on the quality of your vocals but also the quality of your recording. It really is very hard to give a good judgement if the singer can barely be heard! You will not be receiving any advantage for using echo and reverb...we will be ignoring the special effects and listening to the singer. However, if you know in advance that you are going to be unavailable to sing during one of the rounds ( a holiday perhaps) then please pm me and I would be happy to divulge the details of the next round to you, allowing you to to sing your song and send me the link. I will then submit on your behalf. (Provided you get through the previous round of course!!
Your song should be the original recording artist, not a re-release of the song in later years, unless it was re-released during the 80's!
Incidentally, it is impractical to ask everyone (other than the judges) to listen to all the singers in the contest but I would ask that you listen to at least a few of your fellow contestants....all the way through their song rather than just the first 30 seconds! We all sing our songs as best as we can right ot the end of the lyrics so it is only polite to listen to the end! And of course if you miss people from one round..you can always check them out in the next round (provided they are still in!!!)
Ok good luck everyone! Remember it is always hard to get cut from a contest so sing with the attitude that you might get cut in round 1. Have some fun while you are in it...that is what it is all about!
This song Almost Over You - Sheena Easton was #3 on Top 100 in 1983 and #25 in 1984.
"Almost Over You" It's pretty much impossible to deny that in several key ways, Sheena Easton was an American (well, Scottish, technically) Idol years before the concept took hold on TV and on the pop charts. That certainly doesn't suggest that her talents are insubstantial and superficial but rather that the style of adult contemporary/easy listening featured on this track always seems to function as the most digestible music for a general pop audience. That said, Easton manages to lend a significant amount of personality to this performance that maximizes the fine, even restrained melody. During the first half of the '80s, few singers could match Easton's grasp of the broadly appealing movie soundtrack sort of ballad, and here is distinct proof of that.
This has been moved as I made the mistake of putting first round in auditions(silly me)
Ok ive done a list of 80’s artists that ive searched for and got nothing so were all out of luck for many many top recording artists of our decade, sorry people, it’s a kicker. Im actually stuck myself what to sing but im sure I’ll come with something, instead of my favoured song, With Or Without You (ironic song choice I know) I might go with Timmy Mallet - Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini! Arrgggh why do they keep all the tripe :(

Oh but all is ok people, they do still have Milli Vanilli! The list is mainly made up of British artist or songs that were hits in the UK so apologies if no-one has heard of some but believe me they were all huge in the 80's!
