eh, noticed a contest for blues only... host will not accept auditions from golds... yes, the host can do whatever they like with their contest, but what are your opinions of this type of limitation???
yes, my post was prompted by a particular contest, but my question is NOT directed at that contest...
i have no interest in starting a bashing thread, just thought the concept in general would generate a healthy discussion....

if its a contest that includes a month or more sponsorship, then why not just for blues? i agree shug, different strokes for different folks. no different than a specific genre or sex or age, right?

If it was that kind of contest, then it is perfectly acceptable to allow blue members only. Now what if someone put up a contest for Gold Members Only...I can just imagine the uproar. But with so many contests out there to choose from you just go to the one that tickles your fancy I guess..Now with the way I sing they most likely hope that none of them tickle mine..but I enter them anyway..

My opinion......the purpose of this contest is to award gold membership to a blue member should they win or come second or third.........why would a gold member(excuse the sexual overtones) lol, want to enter anyway....I have seen people complaining on the contest thread which quite truthfully made me sad.....and i thought was petty and unsporting and in my opinion only succeded in furthering the ''BLUE/GOLD ridiculous divide. the actual blue only contest is acceptable,,,i was mad when she put up a link on another thread that was solely designed for gold to sponsor blue.......so why cant a blue do the contest and give the gold award to a blue......all thats gonna do is ensure that a blue with agreat voice is gonna win......and them not so good dont stand a chance......so yes...a gold singing for them would have been fairer......but ive said my bit about this contest on another thread and dont wanna carry it on...lol...

In this particular case there's no "divide" reason being, a Gold member is offering to sponsor members as Gold, she is GIVING something to the Blue members, and since there are Blue members that state they can't afford the membership, three months "Gold" is something they can now strive for. My thought is there is nothing discrimatory when you are "giving to the less fortunate" who might not otherwise have such an oppt. Assuming this were open to all members, the person sponsoring this contest might be giving "Gold" to others that can easily remain Gold, and gain less from the prize..

colin, if you read my post in the contest, you would see that i gave reasons in support of the contest being blue only....
and to answer your question, i don't have a hope of winning any contest, so the prize is irrelevant to me... if i were to enter, it would be for the fun of meeting others & singing some tunes i like with like-minded ppl...
so, i pose a question to you now... in your first line, you say "THE PURPOSE IS THE PRIZE".... is it??? is it a complete waste of time to compete in a contest if you don't win???

There's a difference between Blue members wishing to shut out Gold members and vice versa..
This is a Gold member trying to include blue members ! VERY different scenerio !!
IOW... If you wish for something, here's an oppt to earn it ! It's how life is :) Why offer a school scholarship to a judge sitting on the bench when there are teens that need to go to school ?

The intent BEHIND the prize.
I'm not speaking out of my ass here (for a change)
I once held a "Blue-Only" contest ... And it was that way FOR A REASON.
The reason being: I was awarding the winners Gold-Memberships.
I was not interested in awarding it to already gold members for them to 'pass-along'...
The purpose was: There are LOADS of blues who said they would go gold if they could - so I gave them a chance to win it "for themselves"
And for anyone who cares:
The contest was NOT based on vocal ability alone. It was based on emotions ... They shared something personal and a song to go with it...
It was SUCH a success to Sum and "My Godmother" actually ended up sponsoring EVERYONE who entered one-month... not JUST those who won!
so it was pretty special. And everyone earned it for themselves by just being who they were.

if i were to host a contest, it wouldn't be gold-only... oh, you can be sure that it would be a very unfair totally biased contest and have nothing to do with vocal ability (unless you are gawd-awful, then it might matter some)....
but, for the sake of answering you, the only logical reason i could see for hosting a gold-only comp would be to generate subscriptions... a side-effect would be ticking a bunch of ppl off, and that certainly isn't cool...

Actually - i considered running a contest that would utilize the "Inner Circle" functions, which is of course a Gold feature, meaning blue members would not be able to participate. I did consider that some blues might be offended they couldn't play, but I still thought it worthwhile. In the end it got too complicated logistically and I shelved the idea. But I may pull it out one of these days. The contest, that is.

Point was: There IS no reason to host a gold only contest unless you're TRYING to be malicious and exclusive....
The reason people host Blue Only contest is NOT for that reason. It's because they want to make one of their blue competitors Gold.

Well, realistically this should be viewed as follows, Blues already are excluded from certain features, yet when you have a Gold member wishing to include blue members it negates any unfavorable aspects of such a contest. A Blue member holding a contest for Blues only (would be different and likely Blues shooting Blues in the foot), Gold members have features already only available to them so Golds holding contests for Golds solely, while permissible would make the person appear how ?
When somebody that has more, yet also has limited resources is offering what they have to those with less, the intent truly is what must be looked at..
If you had 100 dollars to give away would you wish to give it to the CEO of a Fortune 500 company ? Or a person struggling to survive ?

I do not choose to be gold, i'm sponsored. I appreciate it, but my CHOICE is to be blue. My Joe is blue, and I want to be blue too. :)
However, If i chose to sponsor a blue only contest with the prize being gold membership, even though my NAME would be blue, then how would that be shooting in the foot. Blue members DO do that as well.

I only think blues holding a contest for only blues would backfire assuming blues wish to feel justified complaining regarding not being included in Gold features down the road or at present. In doing-so blues are the ones setting up additional barriers. IOW.. Those wishing to be included should not exclude..
"Do unto others"
There's one word behind all of this though and that's
"Intent"
Reason being certain members that are Gold have blue memberships and use those to give Gold subscriptions with some anonymity so nothing is "across the board"
