Do you want honest vocal critiques?

I've seen others state that they will provide you with honest critiques. That may be true, but I wanted to provide you with another option as there seems to be so few.

I, too, will be honest with you. I will review your recording and let you know - honestly - what I thought. I will review:

* Tone
* Pitch
* Clarity
* Emotion
* How well you began/ended the song
* Overall Performance (worth 15 points)

For each category, I will give you up to 5 points (with the exception as mentioned above)for a combined possible total of 40 points.

Pretty straightforward. I will be honest, but I will not be brutal as I don't find any need to beat anyone up for following their dreams. I do, however, want to be as fair and honest with you as I possibly can.

With that said, it is only fair that you should know that I have a good ear for talent, and I have been in the music business for many years. It has always been my passion, one that I share with others through developing their vocal abilities.

Now, on with the music!

(Keep in mind, any critique received is ONLY the opinion of the individual providing said critique. It is not the end-all-be-all of how you perform. You should always get another opinion...)

Well, here it is then...

Overall, a good performance. You truly have the "twang" down for country music. You started off on pitch but ended a bit flat. All in all, you did well as you can see from the scoring:

Tone=4; Pitch=4; Clarity=4; Emotion=4; Start/End of Song=3; Overall Performance =11; Total Score=30 out of 40.

Stick to the country genre as it appears to suit your musical styling. Work on the ending a bit so not to fall flat and lose steam. Watch to be sure that you don't drag notes out too long as you appeared to do with this song as well.

I enjoy hearing songs where the singer does not attempt to imitate the original artist. Instead, they inject a bit of themselves into the music - as you did with your rendition of this song.

Perhaps this is due to you only just learning the song prior to singing it, but I found the performance to be almost mechanical and lacking real emotion. To me, it felt as though you were trying harder to be sure you hit the notes, and, because of that, failed to connect with the music. There were a few sharp spots, but overall, you kept on pitch and did a nice job.

Great song selection for your voice. This is what it is about... Choosing a song that is right for you. (I tend to agree with Simon Cowell from AI - Sorry folks...)

Anyway, the only thing I would say is to be sure you have all your settings "set" before you start so you can focus on your music. Due to the distraction (only seen courtesy of the webcam), you started of a bit flat, but improved quickly and carried it through to the end amazingly well.

As for scoring:

I must say I was amused in listening to the song, though not overly impressed. I can see you had fun with it from the improvs and "ooh's" and "ahh's" you provided; however, I feel as though your focus on sounding as the original left you falling flat - literally. Most notes were not on key.

Not one that I've heard before, but I feel as though you did a nice job overall on it. You started off a bit flat, but progressively improved as the song moved on. I like that you have a bit of country "twang" - but not too much where it would overpower the song. It was a nice touch. I enjoyed listening to this song, so thank you for forwarding it along to me.
