WELCOME TO CHALLENGE FOR ALL STARS # 166. A WEE CELEBRATION TO Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of U.S. Senate Resolution 155, which designates April 6th as Tartan Day in the United States of America
THIS IS CHICCA AND WEE: HOSTS FOR TODAY’S THEME.
THE THEME FOR TODAY IS to recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to the United States. Whereas April 6 has a special significance for all Americans, and especially those Americans of Scottish descent, because the Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, was signed on April 6, 1320 and the American Declaration of Independence was modeled on that inspirational document; Whereas this resolution honors the major role that Scottish Americans played in the founding of this Nation, such as the fact that almost half of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent, the Governors in 9 of the original 13 States were of Scottish ancestry, Scottish Americans successfully helped shape this country in its formative years and guided this Nation through its most troubled times;
FAMOUS SCOTTISH AMERICANS • John Williams, born Glasgow, developed the vaccine against smallpox. • Alexander Graham Bell, born in Edinburgh, invented the telephone. • John Logie Baird, born Helensburgh, invented the television. • John Boyd Dunlop, born Scotland, patented the pneumatic tyre. • Mrs Keiller, born Dundee, invented marmalade. • Charles MacIntosh, born Glasgow, patented the raincoat. • John Loudon MacAdam, born Ayr, invented tarmac road surface. • John Chalmers, born Dundee, invented the adhesive stamp. • Robert Louis Stevenson, born Edinburgh, wrote the world famous book treasure island. • Patrick Ferguson, born Scotland, invented the breech-loading rifle. • James Simson, born Bathgate, was the first man to use chloroform. • William Symington born Lanarkshire, was the first man to propel a boat by steam. • James watt, born Greenock, Scotland, invented the modern steam engine. • Alexander Fleming, born in Ayrshire, Scotland, discovered penicillin. • Kirkpatrick MacMillan, born Thorhill, Scotland invented the bicycle. ________________________________________ • John Paul Jones, born in Scotland, founded the American navy. • Alan Pinkerton, born in Glasgow, 1819, founded the world famous detective agency in the U.S.A. • John Campbell from Glasgow founded the city of Auckland, new Zealand. • John Law, born in Edinburgh, founded the Bank of France. • William Paterson, born Dumfries, founded the Bank of England. • The first Prime Minister of Australia was Andrew Fisher, born in Lanarkshire , Scotland. • Thomas Brisbane, born on the west cost of Scotland, was the state governor in Australia, the city of Brisbane was named after him. • James McDonald, born in Dundee , Scotland, was the voice for Mickey Mouse for over 40 years. • There are more Scots living outside of Scotland than inside. • More than half of the defenders of the Alamo were of Scottish decent, among them Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. • Austin in Texas was built from blueprints from Scotland. ________________________________________ • Scotland has the least populated density in Europe. • The furthest you can be from the coast in Scotland is about 50 miles. • The first person mentioned in the Bible is a Scot, King James VI. • The last battle to be fought on British soil was the Battle of Culloden,1746 • Scotland is the only country in Europe that the Romans could not conquer. • Scotland is the only country in the world, that Coca Cola is not the best selling soft drink. Irn Bru made by the Barr company is the best selling soft drink. • There are more pipe bands in America than in Scotland. • The Lincon Monument in Edinburgh was the first statue of an American president to be constructed outside the U.S.A. in 1893 in memory of the Scottish soldiers who fought in the American civil war. • There are over 450 golf courses in Scotland. • The first Airship to cross the Atlantic was built in Scotland. • Theodore Roosevelt said of the Scots " they became the vanguard of our civilisation ". • 7 Scotsmen were in the us 7th cavalry with General Custer at the Battle Of Little Big Horn on 25 June, 1876. • Johnny Walker red label is the worlds largest selling whisky. • The Romans called Scotland , Caledonia. • The Q.E.2 was the largest ship built in Scotland. • Scotland has 787 islands most of which are on the west coast. • St Andrews golf course is the oldest in the world.
This is just a selection of Scottish Americans who have contributed to America’s greatness in every field. We have not touched upon sportsmen or women, film stars etc., etc. If we did, the list would be endless, so suffice to say that these lists prove the very special relationship that exists between America and Scotland. It is hoped that now we have a Tartan Day established, all Americans will take a longer and more interested look at Scotland, their ancestoral homeland, and begin to look further than golf courses. Spend time reading the history, learn about their present situation, help them to create a better future for their country - after all, it is your ancestral home too.

The average Englishman, in his home he calls his castle, puts on his national costume - A shabby Raincoat patented by Charles MacIntosh of Glasgow, Scotland.
He drives a car fitted with tyres invented by John Boyd Dunlop of Dreghorn, Scotland.
At the office he recieves his mail with adhearive stamps which, although they bear the queen of England's head, were invented by John Chambers of Dundee, Scotland.
During the day he uses the telephone, Invented by Alexander Graham Bell of Edinburgh, Scotland.
At home in the evening he watches his daughter ride her bicycle, invented by Kilpatrick MacMillan, A Blacksmith from Dumfries, Scotland.
He watches the news on television which was invented by John Logie Baird of Helensburough, Scotland and hears an item about the U.S. Navy founded by John Paul Jones of Kirkbean, Scotland.
He has now been reminded too much of Scotland and in desperation picks up the Bible, only to find that the first man mentioned in the good book is a Scot - King James VI - who authourised it's translation.
No where can an Englishman turn to escape the ingenuity of the Scots, he could take to drink but the Scots make the finest in the world, he could take a rifle and end it all but the breech-loading rifle was invented by Captain Patrick Ferguson of Pitfours, Scotland.
If he escaped death, he could find himself on an operating table, being injected with Penicillin, discovered by Alexander Flemming of Darvel, Scotland, and given an aneasthetic, discovered by Sir James Young Simpson of Bathgate, Scotland.
Out of the aneasthetic he would find no comfort in learning that he was as safe as the Bank Of England which was founded by William Patterson of Dumfries, Scotland.
Perhaps his only hope would be to get a transfusion of good SCOTTISH blood
A Scotsman visited London for his annual holiday and stayed at a large hotel. However, he didn't feel that the natives were very friendly. "At three o'clock every morning," he told a friend, "they hammered on my bedroom door, one the walls, even on the floor and ceiling. Sometimes they hammered so loud I could hardly hear myself playing the bagpipes.

For his eighteenth birthday a rich aunt gives Paul a bale of tartan and money to have a kilt made. He goes to a kilt maker and gets measured up. As he’s a bit shy he asks the kilt maker to make some matching undies. Two weeks later Paul goes back to the shop. "Your kilt and underwear are ready,” says the kilt maker. “and there was five yards of material left over.” “That’s grand,” replies Paul, “Maybe I could get my girlfriend a matching kilt.” Paul rushed home. Excitedly he pulls on the kilt. He loves it so much he immediately dashes round to show his girlfriend. Unfortunately, in his excitement, he forgot to don his underwear. When his girlfriend answers the door, Paul does a twirl and said, "Well, what do you think?" "Wow," she exclaims. "But here’s the biggest surprise,” he screeches, yanking up the kilt, “have you ever seen anything like that?” "Oh, my God," says his girlfriend, “that’s amazing.” "Well I've got five more yards at home,” says Paul eagerly. “I’d be happy to let you have it anytime"

Six_String_kountry co-hosting ss gladiators w/my friend scott, join us in auditions!
“and there was five yards of material left over.”
“That’s grand,” replies Paul, “Maybe I could get my girlfriend a matching kilt.”
Paul rushed home. Excitedly he pulls on the kilt. He loves it so much he immediately dashes round to show his girlfriend. Unfortunately, in his excitement, he forgot to don his underwear.
When his girlfriend answers the door, Paul does a twirl and said, "Well, what do you think?"
"Wow," she exclaims.
"But here’s the biggest surprise,” he screeches, yanking up the kilt, “have you ever seen anything like that?”
"Oh, my God," says his girlfriend, “that’s amazing.”
"Well I've got five more yards at home,” says Paul eagerly. “I’d be happy to let you have it anytime"

MacDonald was in poor health. He asked his friend MacDougal if he would pour a bottle of scotch over his grave if he should die one of these days. MacDougal said, "Sure'n I'll be glad, laddie, but would you mind if I passed it through my kidneys first?"
