If it's an absence of thought before a break, it must be a liberal!
If the person is just stinking mad, especially because they're overly paranoid and think the government is trying to control them, it must be a conservative!
ladylikepsych happy thanksgiving to all.....happy anniversary to me and hubby
but what if......they are paranoid that the government is trying to control them and because of it they have a mental breakdown followed by an absence of thought and leads up to a shooting spree?

I think it is a mistake to jump to the conclusion that this is 'Islamic Extremism' because the murderer is Muslim. I think it is a mistake to assume that anyone who raises the question as to whether the murderer is mentally ill or not is somehow excusing them from what they did. It is not as simple as that, and that is why you have a legal system that looks for the truth. I am not going to say 'innocent till proven guilty' in this case, as the question of whether he carried out the crime is not in doubt.
I know that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is the brain's way of coping with a traumatic incident - hence the name. It can occur in anyone, regardless of their job, gender, age or religion. I've seen it in my ex father-in-law. It is terrifying to witness to be honest, and anyone that lives through it or with it (whether they themselves suffer, or whether they support a family member through it), deserves a medal.
I am not a psychologist. I have no way of knowing what mental illness (if any) the murderer was suffering from. The media do not know. The only person who truly knows is the murderer. What I do believe is this - it is easy for all of us to stand in judgement, but none of us know exactly what happened that day beyond it being an awful awful tragedy, which could have been avoided had proper psychological assessments been carried out.

yah...there probably are similarities but like suicide, most don't notice the warning signs until it's already too late.

Sorry Frank. Let me rephrase things!
If it's an absence of thought before a break, it must be a liberal!
If the person is just stinking mad, especially because they're overly paranoid and think the government is trying to control them, it must be a conservative!
There, that should put it in context now.

My sympathies go out to those affected.
