I think it's simple for the Contest Host to do it just that way...and some rounds they have judges too/.... why would you want to offer opinion if you are Not in the Contest though? I just stay away if its that way.... less headaches or worries then ;)
Ok..to expand on this...are hosts of this contest kinda new to Karaoke? Have they really been in a REAL karaoke contest? I've participated in real karaoke contests, and some of the rules they make up are really strange. Does anyone have an opinion on this...and please, no drama or hatin' :)

I have been to many "live karaoke" contests, you win not by talent either, its how many friends you brought with you and how much you drink in the bar. most "live karaoke" contests run for 8 weeks, who drinks the most wins, or the chic with the biggest boobs smallest shirt....
I guess I am pretty naive when it comes to this I guess. I ran a contest where the contestents sang a song. Then the judges listened and picked the auditions, and the peeps sang their best and were judged by that. It has changed so much in the last six months. :)
Doesn't that mean some may not vote for the best ones, so they get eliminated soon? lol it SHOULD be an objective vote, but ya know, some people's kids... lol

I don't follow many contest - but most of the ones I've seen lately - follow that format.
From what I've seen, there are people who drift from the standard to mix things up and offer something different but I wouldn't say its over-powering. Then again - I think I've followed three contest in the last few months ... so.
Well, if they were REAL contests, then they would have REAL prizes. Mostly it's just for bragging rights and getting to know people you don't normally come across.

Aint that the truth! LOL Went to one contest and the grand winner was suppose to go to the grand finale contest in Vegas. I thought sure let's try. Dragged my husband and my BF with her hubby. The winner would get a $25 tab from the bar and move on to the finals. There was a party that night and party girl was drunk as heck. Course she won after singing a Britney SPears song. Ok, she didn't sing, she giggled through it LOL. At least 3 other females sang fantastic, and I thought I knew who won( not me lol I knew that for sure). Well, when they finally named the winner, we were all surprised! Drunk birthday girl won! LOL The one who should have won, got 2nd place and I got 3rd. I don't bother with live contests or contests on here either. I have been in 3 cuz friends asked me to participate. Not that I am expecting to win, just wish they would be fair and not bias LOL( the lives one I mean, the ones on SS is only online and for fun. Not that the live ones aren't fun but they lead somewhere for a grand prize.)

I can only offer you from my experience some sort of answer. I'm currently in my second contest where the singers actually vote, and I must tell you, it's the most civil, pleasant, encouraging contest that I've seen. Rita, (A10Cgirl) works very hard to keep a very clean, non biased, non controversial DRAMA free enviroment in her contests, and she does so beautifully. She is NOT new to karaoke at all, and is a very organized host.
The way that our contest is set up, we're split into groups...A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H...group A votes very quietly on group B via pm..B votes 1 out of group A. C votes D, and D votes C..etc etc..The person voted out, doesn't just leave, but is encouraged to stay and still enjoy and participate in the contest. :) The next round may be different..each round voting may be different..some are vote from your own group..the catch is, nobody has been told to vote for the best or the worst at this point..so you can vote very strategically..I personally choose to vote the weakest singer for that round, but thats just me.
This is a very gentle way, and although some may say popularity, i don't think it is...and actually, i think the majority of participants will stay and just enjoy the songs and the singing! Rita has it all organized beautifully, and shes very strict in her beliefs and in her rules..I for one admire the woman so darn much! and I will continue to participate in her contests happily, regardless if i win or lose. :) and yes, she does offer prizes, and comes thru with them. She's a wonderful hostess and organizer.
I guess it can also go the other way if the contest isn't followed closely or the hostess doesnt command the respect that Rita does..command? maybe not the proper word..gain, hold, receive...maybe those are better words..Anyway, this woman has earned the respect that she receives, and in her contests, this method works beautifully. (sorry its so long)
I'm not showin' my boobs to anybody just to win a singing contest. If you wanna see my man-boobs, you're gonna have to do it the old fashioned way; buy me dinner.
It's a real dilema. If you judge the songs by a host and judges...someone screams it is unfair (mostly the ones who get eliminated) so some hosts decide, ok I will not judge the songs I will let the contestants do it...Seems ok but then someone does not like this because it is a popularity contest... No way to win.
Best bet is to join if you like and have fun. If you get eliminated look for another one to join. Heck it is not like there is a major prize at stake here it is just a little singing fun. I do not know of any host or hostess who enjoys eliminations, or who runs a contest to belittle anyone.
Novella wrote:Not a contest gal, but i think it's a nice way to get people to listen to one another objectively and takes pressure of the host to select winners and eliminate people.
You hit it on the nose there. I have hosted several contests and it is a lot of work but is also very fun. I met people I didn't know and made a few friends along the way. I listened to very very good and some very bad singers and through it all I think most were having a good time. I know I did. You see by hosting you never get eliminated and get to stay for the whole thing...hee hee

I go to a contest every year. The rounds are vote based (despite only having 2 people with me, I got through with 17 votes, the girl that came second had 11 votes and... 11 people with her) I got to the final, and I didn't expect to win as there was this AMAZING opera singer (I was talking to her, she'd had 10 years training) anyway, I got it in the neck from a male judge that my track had backing vocals, but the girl he decided would win had backing vocals on her track. She also happened to be wearing very little. Make up your own mind as to whether she won through talent or looks. The opera lady should have won, but she was 40ish and didn't forget to put her clothes on before leaving the house. I reported the judge, as it turned out others had noticed too, and he no longer judges this contest =)
I'm a recovering contest addict...can't talk about it too much...else I start feeling a little jittery... I personally don't like the idea of having the entrants vote on one another. The reason being is that everyone has different standards and the risk of it becoming a popularity contest.
But I resigned myself to viewing the contests as merely challenges to give me that extra push to learn new and more difficult songs and try to improve my skills. I don't take them seriously. But I have to admit, I've had fun in most of the ones in which I've participated. Won some...didn't make it past auditions in others.
uhh ohhh...palms getting sweaty and heart rate increasing... can't talk about it anymore...

Your last contest was fantastic, I enjoyed every minute of it. Was so much fun........
The reason that I kinda got turned away from contests was that the two that I entered didn't seem very 'social'.
I listened to every single entry (start to finish - and that was a LOT of time), yet i saw very few of the contestants listening to my songs or the songs of the other contestants.
Those same non-listeners were simultaneously in other contests, also not listening to any of the singers in those.
So - I think that the method of having the contestants vote might go further in making a contest I would like.
And - My comments are NOT a knock against the contests that I was in, or those like it. I'm just saying, it wasn't what I enjoyed. Ur milage may vary. :-)

I understand where you're coming from SSS. Sometimes there are lots of contestants in one contest. And if your a contestant in a few contests it can become very time consuming trying to listen to every contestant.
I quite like the idea of having groups in contests. I find it easier to follow cos I'm not that bright lol.......
Oh well watching "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" (I do) but I don't know the answers hehehe
LupiAppleTushy wrote:oh Steven, i agree. cheryl is gorgeous and young. I could only HOPE to look that good when i'm a grandmom...(please no time soon!)
Well I try to avoid contests that ask contestants to vote on each other unless I see it as a fun contest where you can get flung out for daft reasons, in which case it's fine.
To begin with, I try to analyse the organiser before entering the contest and work out whether they appear to be responsible and have integrity.
A significant proportion of contests fail to complete because the organiser has failed to appreciate the time it takes to do them and the way a number of people react to getting knocked out (badly in other words).
So, once having established that the organiser is level-headed and fully committed to their contest, I will enter if the theme suits. It still might not be possible to ascertain from the introduction to the contest whether the organiser will put out the votes to the public in later rounds but if it does happen, I find it irritating that it hasnt been mentioned at the start . I dont want my singing performance to be voted down because someone I don't know doesnt like the shirt I'm wearing or has never heard the song I have chosen, I want the appointed judge to do it. At least that way, you have had the chance to get a feeling for what they like and alter your tactics accordingly!
LaNell has had a heckuva day @ work & is glad to be @ home now! :)

I have to agree here...I was in one of Rita's contests once and she is an outstanding contest hostess.
When I enter a contest regardless of what the rules are, even if I don't totally agree with them, I will abide by them. If I don't think I can cope with the rules, I will not enter the contest. Or I will at least alter my expectations as to the outcome.

Sultry_Eyes has hit the uk, whoohoo now i can see my kids again :-)I understand where you're coming from SSS.

:)I agree with you completely, Lupi. I am in that contest with you & I was previously in another one of Rita's contests. She's got her act together!

cheryliana the great pretenderI have to agree here...I was in one of Rita's contests once and she is an outstanding contest hostess.
When I enter a contest regardless of what the rules are, even if I don't totally agree with them, I will abide by them. If I don't think I can cope with the rules, I will not enter the contest. Or I will at least alter my expectations as to the outcome.
