Binky- listening&watching elvis all day mmm mmm mmm mmercy
I have heard it was possible & oh wooow wouldnt that be icing for alot of peeps here to go gold too if that was a feature like stereo too :) coolness Vella
But for those folks (like me) who are unable to get fancy soundcards/equipment (for whatever reason) this is sooooooooooo much fun!!!!
I don't own this computer so I'm not allowed to install stuff. It's amazing being able to sing and actually HEAR the reverb live too.. I'm having fun BUT.. the settings are weird and the timing is off... But who knows.
If Ksolo can do, Snap can do it better :) I would just be amazed if they did.

And Donny... bahaha.. Snap IS it for me... but I gotta admit... I haven't been THAT excited to sing in a long long LONG time.
Cheekylilvixen wrote:Donny, their have been threads in the Suggestion folder about getting reverb on the site and other voice effects. So, it's nothing new lol.
It *is* something new... because as far as I've known.. no other site HAS offered vocal effects until now.
Maybe SingShot, I don't know - I was never able to get the sound worked out there.
Shannon, to you it appears transparent, but it's not the same as the recorder on snap. Here, it is entirely an non-invasive application. With ksolo, it's a separate application that ksolo installs on your PC which works as a helper application running inside IE/Firefox. It's very much like what ksuperstar used to have with the separate desktop application, running inside the browser when its required. You mentioned you're not allowed to install stuff on your PC, well, when you clicked download and install, that's exactly what you did.
Yes, having a standalone application and a cached copy of the backing music on your hard drives allows the end-user CPU to do alot more of the heavy lifting with sound management, allowing the application to do all sorts of power intensive stuff in software like reverb, etc. Singsnap piggybacks off the flash platform and the backing tracks are streamed not cached so it is limited in some ways.
I'm surprised that ksolo actually has a right to cache a copy on the user's drive. I suspect the licensors granting them the rights to publish don't realize they are actually doing that, or they're using some serious DRM encryption to protect it from piracy.
BTW, did you read the terms and conditions that come associated with installing that recording app to your PC? Most of it is typical software orwellian boilerplate, but one area that should spook the shit out of you is original works... Perform one on there, and you forfeit ownership of the words/music to them, forever. Just one of a few little fun surprises that await those who don't read the fine print.
red_laffy_taffy wrote:I cannot use that site....I cannot get the soud right so ....this is it for me
It automatically default my recording settings to "phone" for some reason, so I have to re-set it to stereo every time... The other issue is the feedback (as mentioned) and getting the mic/music levels even... I only tried with a couple songs - I found it most fun just to sing (without recording) because ya still hear yourself with reverb, echo, etc., whatever effect you choose!
Cheekylilvixen wrote:no, I meant that the members on here have asked for it in the suggestions folder, that it is nothing new among the SS members. :)
Right.
Asking for it is not new. But the facility to actually have it 'live' or possible, is a 'new' possibility. I believe that is what Donny was saying. "Complain about not having what another site has got" ... meaning, there hasn't been a site (that I am aware of) that HAS provided live-reverb.. until now. So now that another site IS offering it - he is thanking me for giving them something 'new' to complain about.
I imagined that when people here were asking for reverb and effects they wanted to hear it 'live' I know that's how I imagined it anyway... else how would you know if you liked the effect or not? Unless I am mis-understanding you there.
It wouldn't suprise me at all that HERE is where they got the idea from in the first place with so many people asking as an incentive to sway back 'competition'.
for reverb all i did is bought a karaoke machine and bought a wire they allows you to plug it into your record jack on your pc and sing off karaoke machine me, rottiecolt, jennifer061083, and dreamcatcher4 have our sound that way if ya wanna check sound quaity
just go to your local guitar center or sam ash and buy a simple four channel mixer with on board effects cost is about 60.00 bucks and foranother 6000 you can get a multi directional condenser mic.
since my mic uses a 1/4" connector, i bummed a reverb guitar pedal off a buddy of mine... stuck it inline between my mic & my PC... worked fine & dandy...
then i got a digitech vx400 vocal processor (goes on the floor, with pedals & stuff, so i can change effects while singin without using my hands)... many MANY more options...
I realize there are ways... Obviously.... Loads of people have reverb.. but for me, who is unable to upgrade with fancy toys and such... This is a REALLY EXCITING and incredibly enticing alternative that I was under the *impression* was not possible with 'online karaoke' ... but it seems it is. So it's kind of interesting.
personally, I think you're better off going the xeno route and getting some sort of hardware to take care of effects. Even if snap did offer some vocal effects like they do on ksolo, and it's not impossible, just invasive and CPU intensive, I'm guessing folks would get tired of the limited number of unalterable effects in a hurry.
I have a myspace and tried ksolo...yes the effects are awesome but the feedback on my computer is terrible with it.....and theres not to much to sing there.....
Yeah they suck... the sound doesn't match up well... I was just amazed reverb was even POSSIBLE live... I've spent the stinkin night playing around over there... It was FUN!!!!
And Donny... bahaha.. Snap IS it for me... but I gotta admit... I haven't been THAT excited to sing in a long long LONG time.
I agree...It is really cool to be able to sing with reverb and hear it as your singing.....if only snap could do something like that and figure out how to minimize the feed back yet keep the music in sync with the lyrics No one would be able to top them! =) Well no one can now....just sayin it would be even better! =)
alrighty... from what i understand, this is how it works:
the snap recorder uses web-based flash to record a mix of your vocals and the streaming track in real time.... that's why the vocals match up with the track EXACTLY as you performed it... as you are singing it, it is being mixed into a single track with the music... that is also why any effects you add to your vocals have to be done via hardware (either external or built into your soundcard)...
sites that offer effects on your vocals basically install a VERY VERY limited audio editing application on your computer... the recorder interface uses the editor to alter your vocals on your machine, and at the same time it records your vocals as one track... it simultaneously plays the backing track from your cache... legal issue being if it was loaded in your cache, then basically the site allowed you to download the track from them, and it is VERY VERY unlikely the site has the distribution rights to allow its members to do that... anywho, when you save the song, it mixes your recorded vocal track with the backing track, and the two can easily be out of sync... the saved mix is then uploaded to the site...
with the right editing software and a bit of know-how, you can easily accomplish the same thing here... download the track, record your vocals, add effects to your vocals, mix the tracks, then upload it back to snap... and since you are doing it manually, you would have much more control over your effects and the sync, unlike with the castrated software that other sites put on your machine... snap can't tell you that it is allowed because they don't have the legal rights to let you download the files... and it is curious that other sites are attempting to get around the law... wonder how long they'll last???
What you mentioned in your last paragraph is exactly what I do. I've been an out of the closet lip-syncer since I've been on this site.
I've never experienced Live reverb until last night and I had no idea how much fun it was... Not only do you get to sing in one take, but your voice still has that added extra-punch...
I've sang more on that other site in less than 24 hours then I have here all month.

I dont know how many Pms Ive had saying you can hear buzzing, and I know people are trying to help.
Novella wrote: But... Why bother when someone is doing it for free and of no hassle to me? :)
so i can see this pretty lil thing sitting on my floor:
I am investigating going along this hardware route for a couple of reasons:
Firstly, I can't get my soundcard audio effects software to work on Vista, which isn't an immediate issue as I have partitioned my hard drive so I have part of it still on XP pro. At some point though it will need to be addressed.
Next, I have conflict issues between my card and other programs I have tried to sing at. For some reason I lose all audio effects, the backing track disappears and it's really pissing me off because other people with older cards than me have it working fine and I don't know what the problem is. Grrr!
The other thing though, is the effect my audio effects have on the backing track. Whenever I introduce audio effects, no matter how much or how little I set it the backing track, which can include part of a pre-recorded duet, is also affected by the change. I don't know what the correct term is but this 'double reverb' makes it sound like the backing is coming from a bathroom! This is more prevalent during louder tracks but it does get on your nerves after a while.
That said, £179 for that piece of kit above is money I'm not prepared to fork out. I'll never be taking it THAT seriously.
REALLYMAD wrote: That said, £179 for that piece of kit above is money I'm not prepared to fork out. I'll never be taking it THAT seriously.

yep, works fine if you only want the one effect AND your mic doesn't require phantom power.... actually, i ended up borrowing his entire pedal board, which gave me delay, flanger, chorus, distortion, and something else... lolz... but it did add a noticeable hum to my vocals when i used more than 2 pedals at a time (prolly some bad connections)....

Yes Folks... LIVE! You select whichever effects you want ... you can choose to hear those effects while you sing OR just upon upload...
I am in awe! I was told this sort of thing wasn't possible but they're sure doing it!!!!!!!!
