Vasilopita History:
Vasilopita is a traditional New Year's Day bread or cake in Greece and many other areas in eastern Europe and the Balkans which contains a hidden coin or trinket which gives good luck to the receiver. It is made of a variety of doughs, depending on regional and family tradition, including tsoureki.
It is associated with Saint Basil's day, January 1, in most of Greece, but in some regions, the traditions surrounding a cake with a hidden coin are attached to Epiphany or to Christmas.
In other areas of the Balkans, the tradition of cake with a hidden coin during winter holidays exists, but is not associated with Saint Basil at all. Hasluck (1927) documents the practice among Ukrainians (a pirog is cut); Romanians; Serbs ("chesnitza", eaten on Christmas); Albanians ("pitta", eaten by both Christians and Muslims); Bulgarians (pogatcha, Novogodichna banitsa (for New Year's), Svity Vasileva bogatcha); etc.
On New Year's Day families cut the Vassilopita to bless the house and bring good luck for the new year. A coin is wrapped and hidden in the bread by slipping it into the dough before baking. A piece of cake is sliced for each member of the family and any visitors present at the time, in order of age. Slices are also cut for various other people or groups, depending on local and family tradition. They may include St. Basil and other saints, the Virgin Mary, the Church, the poor, the king (formerly), and the Kallikantzaroi , commonly translated as goblins.
Saint Basil's Feast Day is observed on January 1, the beginning of the New Year and the Epiphany season known as the Vasilopita Observance.
The traditions surrounding Vasilopita are very similar to western European celebrations of the Twelfth Night and Epiphany: the Provençal gâteau des rois and the Northern French galette des rois, the Catalonian tortell, and the Louisiana king cake. Hasluck (1927) connects both the western and the eastern celebrations to the Roman Saturnalia and the ancient Greek Kronia, the festival of King Cronus, which involved selecting a "king" by lot.
The name Vasilopita comes from vasilefs 'king' + pita 'pie', but was reinterpreted as Saint Basil's (Vasilios) cake.
Vasilopita Recipe: 4C. Cake flour 4eggs 2C. sugar 1/2lb. butter 3tsp. Baking Powder 1tsp.Baking soda 2c.plain yogurt grated orange or lemon zest..I use both
Cream together the butter,sugar, and egg yolks. Beat the egg whites separately until soft peaks form. Gradually add the egg whites to the butter/sugar/egg yolk mixture. Gradually add the yogurt,baking powder,baking soda, and flour. Add mixture to a floured and greased round cake pan til half full..you might need to use two pans. The one I use at home is a ten inch round pan. Before you bake, close your eyes and drop a coin(any denomination) into the cake mix. Place the cake in a 350 oven until done..about 30 minutes..insert toothpick in center..if comes out clean its done.
Happy singing and listening...Kali Xronia..Happy New Year.

Hi Dear Friends! Lovely theme Tas! We don't eat Vasilopita but OLIEBOLLEN! Hahaha, it's not in the diary so I can't translate it! But that's a Dutch tradition.
lindahuisman wrote:Hi Dear Friends! Lovely theme Tas! We don't eat Vasilopita but OLIEBOLLEN! Hahaha, it's not in the diary so I can't translate it! But that's a Dutch tradition.
An oliebol (plural oliebollen ( pronunciation (help·info)) is a traditional Dutch food. Oliebollen (literally oil balls) are traditionally eaten on New Year's Eve and at funfairs. They are also called smoutebollen (literally lard balls) in Belgium. Sometimes it is referenced in English as Dutch donut.
Oliebollen are a variety of donut made by using two spoons to scoop a certain amount of dough and dropping the dough into a deep fryer filled with hot oil. In this way, a sphere-shaped oliebol emerges.
The dough is made from flour, eggs, yeast, some salt, milk, baking powder and optionally some sultanas or currants or raisins and sometimes apple pieces and zest or succade. The dough needs time to rise for at least an hour. Oliebollen are usually served with powdered sugar.
They closely resemble Italian Frittelle.
They are said to have been first eaten by Germanic tribes in the Netherlands during the Yule, the period between December 26 and January 6. The Germanic goddess Perchta, together with evil spirits, would fly through the mid-winter sky. To appease these spirits, food was offered, much of which contained deep-fried dough. It was said Perchta would try to cut open the bellies of all she came across, but because of the fat in the oliebollen, her sword would slide off the body of whomever ate them.[1].
A brand new year! A clean slate on which to write our hopes and dreams. This year: Less time and energy on things; More time and energy on people. All of life’s best rewards, deepest and finest feelings, greatest satisfactions, Come from people-- People like you.
I shall be here for a half hour more..then gloria will be with you all...I shall be back later in the evening...I messed up when new years eve was..and promised mom a casino run..then we'd make the new years bread together on new years eve day...so have to go there today for the casino run..and making the bread tomorrow..taking my laptop with so I can join you guys here...also taking my headset w/mic..so will see if i can sing from the laptop..

New Year’s Reality Check
Another year, another chance
To start our lives anew;
This time we’ll leap old barriers
To have a real breakthrough.
We’ll take one little step
And then we’ll take one more,
Our unlimited potential
We’ll totally explore.
We’ll show off all our talents
Everyone will be inspired;
(Hmm…while I’m writing this,
I’m getting very tired.)
We’ll give up all bad habits;
We’ll read and learn a lot,
All our goals will be accomplished,
Sigh...or maybe not.
Oh well, Happy New Year anyway!
