This is the first of what I hope will be a regular competition to encourage creativity on Singsnap.
The competition has no audition round as such, your audition is your competition entry.

There are 5 categories. You may enter any or all of them, but only one entry per category. The categories are:

Best Original Song
This must be a song with music and lyrics created by yourself. It can be acapella or with instruments or backing (provided the music is not copyright material). Widgets may be used.

Best Parody
Using a backing track available on Singsnap, create a parody song - replacing the lyrics with something of your own - usually for comic effect - think Wierd Al Jankovic. No widgets please I want the Singsnap backing tracks used for this.

Best interpretation
For this you should sing a song in your own unique way - singing the song lyrics as printed but with perhaps a different harmony or in a different style to the original artist. The more creative the better. Widgets are allowed (but do not use a backing track not available on Singsnap).

Best Mashup
Using a backing track available on Singsnap create a mashup by singing the harmony and lyrics of another song over the top. For examples check out my Profile page where I have links to my 'Mashup album'. No widgets please, I want the Singsnap backing tracks used for this.

Best instrumental
Ideal for all you musicians out there. Play your version of the track with any instruments (guitar, keyboard, harmonica etc). No singing. Widgets are allowed.

As creativity can take some time I am leaving this competition open for 3 weeks. Pre-records are permitted - so if you have anything in your back catalogue you want to promote here is your chance.

Competition listeners. As well as a competition for entrants listeners (or lurkers!) are welcome. Please comment on the songs and lend your support to all the entries.

I will be the judge for this competition unless I can get some volunteers to join me. Obviously judges cannot take part in the competition - but they will be able to post songs that fit the criteria in a special list.

Please state the category you are entering with your post.

Deadline for entries 15th July 2009

I'll probably enter a "best original song" and "best interpretation" - possibly a parody. With the original song, we can use any SS backing track?

Sounds like fun! Maybe I'll enter a parody and possibly an original song (if I can figure out how to make it record with SS). Give me some time.

Also, can someone please be so kind to explain how to record an original song into SS. Thanks so much. -flagging.

here is my mashup:

firefall ~ you are the woman

vs.

jonathan edwards ~ sunshine.

i did this a bit different, the chorus was on the sunshine track, so i did the harmony and lyrics of you are the woman on the sunshine track but did add the chorus of sunshine into it as well.

Original songs.
Unless anyone knows a different way you can do either:

1. Record your song and upload it to a website of your choice (I use esnips) . Pick a backing track - record a few seconds of silence onto it. Copy and paste the widget code from your website into the comments box.

or to do it in Singsnap

2. Put the volume slider down to the bottom on any backing track. Play and record your song. The trick is to find a nice long backing track (Lost in Music is quite good). You may faintly still hear the backing track in the background but as long as your song is loud enough it shouldnt interfere.

I am a big fan of Ladylexx's mash up songs. If you get a chance, check them out. It is such a concept to sing the actual tune and words of one song inside another. I just came up with this one. I call it "Mariah meets Amanda" . I had to cut it short because the last part did not mash very well. I hope you like this.

They call the wind Mariah sung over the background music for the song Amanda by Boston

Because I dont want this competition stopped by the admins for TOU infringement it is very important that you do not use backing tracks not available on Singsnap. Im afraid you will either have to use track supplied or pick another song. Sorry.
