So, I'm getting a fancy schmancy new computer getup and was wondering on people's thoughts about Windows 7, especially from the computer know-how people. Thanks.

One last question. I've heard horror stories about Vista 64-bit. I'm really interested in using the 64-bit version of 7. Just wondering if the development of drivers will actually reflect the reality of a 64-bit OS.

Thanks.

The Windows 7 team has worked very hard to improve the 64 bit version. They are very excited about what they came up with. Check out what the guys at Gizmodo had to say about the 64 bit Windows 7: http://bit.ly/Fb6Hj

Well, I went ahead and put on a 64-bit version of Windows 7. No glitches so far and all the software I want to run on it works. Very smooth and somewhat simple, although my wife loves to rag on anything Microsoft and tout Apple. My usual response is "I know you like the commercials, but we can't afford Apple."

New machine, pretty fast, with a quad-core AMD Phenom. Not really meant to be a gaming rig. Have it hooked up to my HDTV and largely use it for storing and watching the backups of my HD movie collection. No video hiccups anymore with this machine.

Anyhow, I'll probably come back on here if anything disastrous occurs. :)

Vista is the ONLY Windows operating system I have ever actually bought (Yeah I know, shame on me!) and it is absolutely pants. I am on dual boot too and I use the XP side almost exclusively.

Here's an extract from my favourite website "The Daily Mash":

"Windows 7 has been introduced after Microsoft admitted its Vista operating system was a 'less good product' in what IT experts have described as the most ambitious understatement since the captain of the Titanic reported some slightly damp tablecloths."

My biggest problem is much like iffy's; none of the software for my Audigy2 soundcard works through Vista, except the drivers, which means you have to go through Windows sound controls (absolutely diabolical on Vista) and none of the EAX audio effects work. In 2 years they have NEVER had that fixed.

I'm going to leave it a year before I jump in on this. Someone told me that 7 is a lot smaller than Vista. This true?

I did Beta testing on 7 on my laptop and my bf just bought a new cpu for his office. The one on my laptop was "decent"... mind you it was still in Beta. BUT the one on his cpu is amazing! It's like they took all the good stuff from XP and all the good stuff from Vista (short list) and put it together. I dont think I've found a single thing about 7 that I didn't like... yet. I was rather annoyed though that even though it's brand new (bought the cpu on monday) it already had like 40 some updates :/

oh well.... I give it two thumbs up. it's CERTAINLY better than Vista, that's for sure.

Right now I am running Vista. The on board sound card that is in this lap top does not seem to want to work properly in SingSnap, and a few other places, so I got an external one.

I don't like the way Vista is laid out or the way it operates on most anything I try to do. Can't even play a decent game of Solitaire on this thing.

Does anyone know if an external sound card .. specifically a Creative X-Fi Surround 5.1 .. works with Windows 7 ?

Creative does have Beta drivers out for various external sound cards. I found a basic driver for a Sound Blaster 24-bit Live External card for Windows 7. Go figure.

Honestly, from what I've read, if you aren't planning on updating your hardware, Windows 7 just isn't for you. Maybe 32 bit would be okay.

Since I bought a new rig largely to use a media center, I figured I'd give Windows 7 a go. So far, it works well and runs rather fast. And my movies look GREAT.

Also, the 64-bit system is backwards compatible with 32-bit software... to a point. There's not a whole lot of legacy support (stuff that's even older than Win XP).

Thank you Piano74,

This is a Hewlett Packard HP Pavilion Entertainment computer with an AMD Athlon Neo Processor MV-40

I am running a 64 bit operating system and have 4 gig.'s of memory on here.
There seems to be lag time on anything I try to do on this computer.

Do you think it would be beneficial for me to upgrade to Windows 7 ?

Yes iffy,

I go into task manager, at least once a day, and make sure nothing is on that doesn't need to be.

Thank you WallyGB,

I had heard there were problems with compatibility on sound cards.

The HP computer seems to be a good one .. I just don't like the Vista operating system and was hoping that Windows 7 was better.

I understand that some of the issues with sound-cards especially some creative cards are not establishing the bit-rate properly. I think that like in Vista, windows is running and processing your sound at 44khz and the sound card at 48, I would imagine checking your sound card settings and see if they actually match up correctly.

I got my upgrade disc about 3 days ago. The only thing I don't like is, where as Vista took maybe one minute to load, 7 takes 3-4 minutes to load.
I have no sound issues, but then I am using the sound card that came with the puter.

I don't understand most of what is being said here
about bits and sound cards etc.

I have a Mac
and everything works just dandy on it.
Have had it for 3 years
and not a problem yet.

I be sticking with my Mac.
