If two consenting adults want to make a legally binding commitment to each other, via marriage, they should be allowed regardless of their sexual orientation or the religious convictions of other people.
Cannot understand why two consenting adults should be fighting to get permission of promiscuous, adulterous and divorce-happy so-called (but hidden far in the closet) straight people, to get married. Sorta like asking a drunk if it's ok to take a tequila shot......yeah, I'm allowed to get drunk, but you are underage.... well, maybe not a good example, but regardless, mine and countless other marriages will remain unaffected, so, what's to fear?
Our energies could be put to better use trying to stop underage teenagers getting pregnant, and making a sham of real marriage, just for appearances sake to make their parents look better in the public eye. That's the real hypocrisy.

I think all unions of 2 adult individuals should be a CIVIL matter. Do away with the word marriage completely. 2 peeps wanna make a legal contract with each other, have at it. I don't care if it is 2 men, 2 women, or one of each.
Let this marriage word go to the churches that seem to have such a hissy fit when you start talking about anything other than a heterosexual couple. Church don't wanna bless the union of 2 people of the same sex and call it "holy marriage", fine with me.
The day that heterosexual couples demonstrate they can do this union thing with that "as long as you both shall live" part AND not want to kill each other in process, then I will rethink my position.

This may be petty of me, but I am reluctant to give them the word marriage. Because it is just not theirs to take.

I would accept that definition. I guess I would specify the individuals be consenting human adults though. lol

I agree with all of you. What a relief to read posts that make sense...
A couple of centuries ago and before that in the UK and I am sure it was like that in other countries, too, marriage used to bring the wealth of two families together. It used to be quite an unromantic thing and more like a business arrangement. OK, the wedding was done in church because this is the way it was done and made sure that people wouldn't get divorced I guess but it was still some kind of business contract in my opinion.
It was about the survival of families on financial grounds and making sure that daughters were taken off their hands and provided for by someone else and this applied to poorer and richer families alike.
The English writer Jane Austen for example never liked this attitude and in each of her novels the emphasis was on loving the person you marry. The view about marriage changed over time into a more romantic kind of thing and this is how we see marriage today, at least in our society.
This whole wedding in church thing was just a formality all along in my opinion, although these days they make it out to be a union made by God like a holy kind of thing which in reality I don't think it was.
These days we marry someone because we love them. We don't see marriage as a business contract anymore. Our view on marriage has changed, our emphasis is on love, not formality and following tradition, therefore it follows that people who love people of the same sex want to make a public commitment to each other, call it civil union or whatever, just as heterosexual people would do and that is only right in my opinion.

to touch up on marrige as you brought up above my dear micha... at one point there was no marriage at all as it relates or very loosely define.. What gets me in modern times is that many feel that the piece of paper makes their marriage.. a marriage.. be they man and woman... woman and woman.. or even man and man... it appears that they need the paper to be justified.. I say there is nothing that two consenting adults can do that requires a stamp from another human being.. it would be hope that thier actions is not going to bring havoc on another..but if it does then a reaction will be appropiate, as actions must occur first before there is a reaction....(taking into account the removal of prevention...lol)
soooooooooo adults what you waiting on..go get you freak on with whom ever..whateva.... you dont have to have the stamp..just do it..gheeeeeeeeeez "u fokes"...lol

Only in the upper classes and middle classes that almost boarded the upper class.
But still has no bearing on how GOD intended marriage, so if people get married in a church then there is this...
"for this purpose shall a man leave his parents and cling to his wife and the two shall become one flesh."
I agree with the 'holy marriage' and 'civil partnerships' but then in church it is actually already called 'holy matrimony' anyway.
However that then kinda sux for Gay or Lesbians that are believers regardless.
One of those topics.. that will be talked about and discussed just like UFO's the creation/evolution theories...

Maybe they deny their natures, get married, and have ten kids so when they finally realize they are miserable pretending to be straight they will have a family to rip apart.
Idaho State University professor Ron Schow has studied LDS homosexuals. Of 136 he surveyed in 1994, 71 percent were returned missionaries and 36 had tried marriage. Only two of the 36 were still married.

I was not attacking her beliefs. I was pointing out a very real problem with homosexual LDS members marrying, having children, and then their families getting torn apart.
It would apply to any family of course, where a gay person were trying to live as a hetero. But among LDS there is a lot more pressure to conform to the "get married and have kids" plan. Even more so than among catholics.

Balderdash. There is much flack and criticism and mockery and name calling on these message boards going on from the other end as there is from non-Christians.
Generally speaking these gay marriage threads (I am gay BTW) have equal measures of venom from both sides.
This is in fact the first thread about gays I have come across where most folk here support gays.
Personally I have never mocked Ari or the Church of Latter Day Saints. Both have some very valid points of view and some good messages.
I do however take exception to being chastised for my lifestyle by those Christian believers who say I am wrong, or an abomination to nature or any number of things.
And to sarcastically say that Christians are not allowed a view here on SingSnap is utter nonsense.
The difference here is unlike most places where Christian folk choose to commune with eachother this place has people of many faiths or no faiths at all and so there are differing opinions about everything. Not the loving communion of a church where like-minded people share their faith but a multi-dimensional place with as many diverse ideas and beliefs as there are people.
Now back to our regular programming... the discussion of gay marriages.
To hobo... please show me where sombody called ari names, or was disrespectful to her that I know what your deifinition of disrespect is...ty ma'am and please tell me if its ok to respond to your answer if you so decide to answer....sound like you taking this way to personal..but thats just an opiinion thats about to be cleared up...opps editing because I just click your profiile and now see you are a man not a woman...so put sir where ever I had ma'am..ty
I so believe that same sex marriages should be allowed in every religion..here is my reasoning..and i know i will get some flack.... but that tis ok...tis my opinion....
maybe God said man with woman etc is a holy marriage...but............God did not say, that if one of his children were born with more female hormones in a male body or if a female had more male hormones, etc...when people realize it is not an illness and not a choice....tis how their bodies are made up....gosh dont know how to put this without peoplem flying off at the hande....so here goes....in simpler terms although we are adults and proper terms should be used....i dare not as someones knickers will get in a knot.... oh crap here goes...lolol...i have heard worse on here.....and being in the medical field these words are like simple everyday words.... a penis does make the man nor vice versa....tis the way the body is....and i say this is another umm...test for us, .....one does not have to be female to be feminine...or does one have to be male to be masculine...lolol does anyone understand what I am trying to say....
sighs.....hahah....tis so hard sometimes to type what ye like not tooffend people....
Marriage= a union of a man and women before the eye's of God...
Civil union = a union of 2 people.... so I have no issue with they want Civil unions (Don't know anyone who does) and think if they would take up THAT fight to get them in every state with equal to marriage rights, that they would have great success.. but when they come and start trying to take marriage away from traditionalist (Which most in the us are), thats where the fight starts...the majority in the US believe Marriage is between a man and a women, thats a deeply set belief and for us, it is akin to trying to force someone elses religion on you when you try to take that belief away... As it stands they are trying to force traditionalist to give up THEIR tradition, beliefs and rights just to appease them...
well i think , God is testing us once more... like i said when some one has more hormones of the opposite sex within...then it makes them a man or a woman.....with the same body.... Omggggggggggg and to think anyone is forcing anything on anyone is crazy and ye know it....there are beliefs that people try to shove up peoples noses everyday.....the trouble is this ha been going on since the time of man.....and i think it is about time for people to open up those Christian hearts and accept what is before them....( US )....No one is taking anything away from anyone..tis called choice...and something else for you to think about.....each religions has offspring religion because they dont like the beliefs and make up their own....and form another religion....and nothing about tradition here......laffs....Gays have always been on this earth.....and they have every right to to equal marriage rights....they work hard...have wonderful homes....pay taxes....and probably in this day and age will have a marriage that is solid....and loving.....Sometimes we all know Tadtions change.....and who is anyone to not allow them to have tradition....I say anyone who considers themselves a Christian need to open their hearts....and look openly at themselves before judging others....And maybe one day we all realize that this was a test of God.....omg and the shock amongst those who have chosen to be so unkind....religion has its place, but to consumme such hatred towards others , has no place on earth...
I have 2 definitions my opinion....
Queers....people who pray on others of the same sex...all walks of life including all religions , yes i said all religions....priests , members..ministers....pastors....etc...they abuse their powers to have abusive sex within their church....
Gays are people who live wonderful lives.....work...pay taxes, raise children ( unwanted children ) etc, and will truly have a marriage that is solid and full of love...
hahah im babbling...but thinks i might have made sense Now off to work i go....and i hope throughout the day, someone somehwere will change their beliefs on this and become a more loving person with...

Fight for civil unions and equal to marriage rights, a battle they CAN win..But when you start messing wiht peoples traditions and beliefs, they will fight you to the death.. Like it or not Marriage IS a religious concept first and foremost.. And I do not know of any religion that does not think that Homosexuality is a sin..
Actually the Quakers in the UK don't believe that homosexuality is a sin. When I was an attender at the local meeting, I went to a weekend away to think about becoming a member and the person leading the workshop was homosexual. He is a man I with many other Quakers hold in high regard. I have met many young gay Quakers, too.

Taking exception to the use of 1Cr 11:11 as evidence that it is about marriage. The topic of the chapter is about a woman's behavior in the church. Verse 3 of that same chapter at first glance could be taken that a man is head of a woman in a marriage. However, if one actually bothers to look up the root words used, the relationship established is one of hierarchy not one of marriage.
The word head is used symbolically to represent that which represents life. It has a secondary meaning of something supreme or prominent. Customs of the time gave women NO rights other than what crumbs they could glean from a man. The very idea of a woman working external to a home was foreign. Forget about her owning property, etc.
Moving on to verse 9 in that same chapter needs consideration. "Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man." Careful analysis of the preposition "for" in this verse is needed to have understanding of the idea of the hierarchy being established. The word "for" actually is the Greek preposition that is used to means, a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act. That indicates order of origin in this case.
That then goes back to the order listed in verse 3. God was first, then man then woman. Hierarchy established based on primary origin is all that is indicated. It is not about unions of any kind. It is about a societal structure of hierarchy reflecting the customs of the time and what people knew then.
Verse 12 in this chapter completes this particular point Paul was elucidating. The word "by" in this verse is the same Greek word used in verse 3 that is translated "for". The word "of" in the beginning of verse 12 gives further emphasis to this point of hierarchy. It is the Greek work "ek" which is the specific preposition denoting origin (the point whence action or motion proceeds), from, out (of place, time, or cause; literal or figurative.
One of the really cool things about the New Testament specifically when studying the Bible is to dig into the prepositions. Greek prepositions indicate a direction. They are much more specific than those used in English. Getting the orientation (no pun intended) correct with the Greek prepositions is key and critical to having understanding of a passage.
This is a case where choosing one verse out of context can if read as a stand alone entity support a position that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the point being written about in the Bible. How a woman behaves inside a church has nothing to do with marriage or a union of two people.

despite what the religious think (especially christians) marriage is not an exclusively religious institution. They have no right to monopolize it or to define it according to their own particular beliefs in a way that imposes upon others who are outside of their religion. If they want to define what a religious marriage is according to their own religious convictions, maybe they should consider calling their own marriages holy marriages or christian marriages. Or they can shut up and let people who do not share their religious convictions use the word marriage to describe their unions as well. :-)

Not to sound mean and if i do sound mean I'm sorry, but um...well if its tradition than maybe the gay and lesbian should make their own tradition and get married. and what ever happened to government and religion being seperate? if marriage is based on religion, than no one should change the governments view. and marriage should just be marriage based on tradition and not government.

Our view on marriage has changed, our emphasis is on love, not formality and following tradition, therefore it follows that people who love people of the same sex want to make a public commitment to each other, call it civil union or whatever, just as heterosexual people would do and that is only right in my opinion.

morning yall um back.... hmmmmmm I dont see any posts in disagreement here yet..why is that...looks like this topic wants to be a "threeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaad kller"
makes sense...anyone that would be in disagreement will be the same folks that are in disagreement in all other subject matters as thinking usally stay on a plain in most cases...
to touch up on marrige as you brought up above my dear micha... at one point there was no marriage at all as it relates or very loosely define.. I guess one could call me seeing you (female) and taking my club and knocking hell out of you and draging you off as my "slave" to do my biddings as a type of marriage..one side as it may be.. we have joined in union for a purpose...lol

Idaho State University professor Ron Schow has studied LDS homosexuals. Of 136 he surveyed in 1994, 71 percent were returned missionaries and 36 had tried marriage. Only two of the 36 were still married.

It would apply to any family of course, where a gay person were trying to live as a hetero. But among LDS there is a lot more pressure to conform to the "get married and have kids" plan. Even more so than among catholics.

There is much flack and criticism and mockery and name calling on these message boards
going on from the other end
as there is from non-Christians.
Generally speaking
these gay marriage threads (I am gay BTW)
have equal measures of venom from both sides.
This is in fact
the first thread about gays I have come across
where most folk here support gays.
Personally
I have never mocked Ari or the Church of Latter Day Saints.
Both have some very valid points of view
and some good messages.
I do however take exception to being
chastised for my lifestyle
by those Christian believers
who say I am wrong, or an abomination to nature
or any number of things.
And to sarcastically say that Christians are not allowed a view
here on SingSnap is utter nonsense.
The difference here is
unlike most places where Christian folk choose to commune with eachother
this place has people of many faiths or no faiths at all
and so there are differing opinions about everything.
Not the loving communion of a church
where like-minded people share their faith
but a multi-dimensional place
with as many diverse ideas and beliefs as there are people.
Now back to our regular programming...
the discussion of gay marriages.

Gays are people who live wonderful lives.....work...pay taxes, raise children ( unwanted children ) etc, and will truly have a marriage that is solid and full of love...
hahah im babbling...but thinks i might have made sense
Now off to work i go....and i hope throughout the day, someone somehwere will change their beliefs on this and become a more loving person with...
have a wonderful day!!!!!!!!

And again that is why they will never win that battle...

I have met many young gay Quakers, too.

well said no matter how one wants to live adultrey , homosexuality. bigamy , pediophiles , beastality . murderers , haters . jealousy. the bible is pretty plain about it being wrong and where one ends up if they chose that way . but each person must work out there own lifes choices and God will be the only judge when we go to our maker . i dont hate anyone who may do the above but i dont aggree with any of the above and i have been guilty of some of the above but forgiven of it and wont do the above anymore with Gods help . if someone hates there guilty of murder in there heart
(edited to add) and before im bashed and attacked for my view remember if you dont want others views that dont aggree with yours then next time put these kind of questions in your innercircle and invite only those who aggree singsnap messageboards i thought was open to all members . as long as folks ask for folks views your going to get differant views from folks

Calling Homosexuality a Sin Is Judging, and Judging Is a Sin
Just a simple thought!!

It is for this very reason that I continue to voice my opinion. :)
And they can't make anyone feel like dung unless someone gives them permission...and they don't have mine!
I'm a Christian...and I'm on the board...until I'm no longer...I'll continue to represent myself as a Christian.
