The winning subscriptions can be passed onto friends or relatives (or even enemies!!)...if the winners choose to do so! :)
For the semi-final we want to really test you...you've made it this far on pure talent, now you need to combine that talent with creativity!!! We want you to take a song, any song you like from the SS catalogue, & change it in some way...you can change the lyrics, you can change the melody, you can remove the music & sing the same words to a different tune, as long as what we get is fundamentally different to what was there originally. We know this is a fairly major task, so you have a week in which to do this...remember, 1 MUST leave from each team before we head into the final...so do what you can to make sure it isn't you!!!…Good luck to all of you!
Ironically (I didn't think of this when I did it!!), I recently went to a charity gig in Bristol, where most of the original Blockheads were performing....Ian Dury died long ago sadly...& his place was taken by none other than Phil Jupitus (who is the guy with me in my profile picture!!)
I knew I was gonna get the boot this time and amazed I stayed as long as I did There is some major talent Congrates to everyone thanks for letting me play......

And regarding rewriting the song, yes, rewrite any or all of it...BUT...we need some of the original there...in other words, if you change the tune, we need the words to be the same (or at least MOSTLY the same)...if you change the words & the tune then the backing melody has to be the same as the original...if you rewrote the words, the tune AND the backing then it would be a new song!!!! lol
Debs and Allie... As always it's with a heavy heart I say goodbye to my sweet bananas :(( This round was VERY tight and I felt you all deserved to stay... No...the song you change must be one on SS...you can sing the words to that song to a different tune if you like, but the song MUST be in some form, recognisable still as the one it says it is

I'm not sure if it's you that didn't understand what I meant, or if I didn't understand your explanation.. lol.. Like for example: if I took the lyrics from a slow song on SS and just sang them to a faster song's backing track, also on SS.. wouldn't that be the same as changing the tune?

Oh I like that too - can we :)
Don't tell him that's what you're doing. Just say you changed the words and the melody a bit, then it fits under: "if you change the words & the tune then the backing melody has to be the same as the original...".

OK, I thought of some more words...or at least Alex's words (gotta be careful not to plagarize around Alex)...it is definitely impossible to distinguished between the talents of those who stay and those who leave! (Alex, 2008). At least impossible for me! :>)

Don't you know it. Plagiarism detection is by far the most important responsibility of university faculty.
True story - my sophomores have to write a 4-6 minute speech on a controversial agricultural issue every spring. They turn these in for their final exam, and then perform it from memory. One year, I had a brilliant student write an impressive speech. I knew the kid was smart, but that speech was too well written...made me cautious. I typed the first few sentences into google.com and FOUND the speech. I kid you not. The sad part? He didn't even change the references page...nothing. Word for word, he had copied and pasted the entire speech into a Microsoft Word document and printed it for his final.
I submitted it to our dean of students, he was given a "zero" on the final exam, and was not allowed to perform his speech for the presentation portion of the exam.
Moral of the story?? Some "judges/teachers" are smarter than they appear ;)

Yep...now that's taking it a bit too far...I've caught my son trying to get away with that nonsense! I asked him "Aren't you going to at least replace the words you can't define?" Then I made him redo it in his own words AND list references! :>)
milesofborg wrote:No...the song you change must be one on SS...you can sing the words to that song to a different tune if you like, but the song MUST be in some form, recognisable still as the one it says it is

Ok, so I'm not sure I understand all of this correctly (my coffee hasn't kicked in yet lol) but the way I think that would be ok... as long as the backing is from SS you can do almost anything with the song I'd say... I think what Miles meant in one of his earlier posts was that if you use the backing track of one song but mute it (to sing a capella for instance) and use the track to sing a completely different song on, with new lyrics and new music - then you didn't change the song, then you wrote a completely new one! lol If I understood YOU right you were talking about singing the lyrics from one song to the music of another? And in my book that would definitely be ok. I guess you can say what we want is for you to change a song, and to be as creative as you can - but we still want it to be apparant what song you changed! If you get what I mean lol...
If I didn't clear anything up feel free to ask again lol... I think both Judge Katie and Judge Miles are working today, and I'll try and get some studying done, but you can always PM your judge or of course post here and wait for us to check in ;)
Good Morning K.A.M ers....and welcome to hell...oops...did i just say that out loud? LOL....First of all i want to say goodbye to the wonderful kitties we lost last round...it was not an easy decision to make...and the scoring was as tight as it gets...so you can walk away with your heads held high...This round is where we really get to see what lies beneath those fabulous voices......this is where YOU get the chance to prove to us that its not just all about the voice...Let us see what you are made of...be as creative as you can possibly be...this is the last hurdle you need to jump......Make it a good one!
Sad also to see so many other great vocalists leave....but that is the name of the game i'm afraid!
I probably will not be around much the next couple of days as My dear mother is emigrating to Australia and leaves on thursday morning...so i want to try and spend as much time as i can with her before she leaves...I will however be checking in and also checking pm's and the thread...so if help is required...please don't hesitate to ask :)
Reply by Jules166GOLD on November 18, 2008 at 7:35 AM
Sorry to hear that you mother is emigrating, Katie. My mother recently moved away and it's very hard now... she only moved 2 hours away and that's bad enough :S

As long as the slow song & fast song aren't the same song then yes!!! lol If you want to sing Jingles Bells to Motorhead's Ace of Spades then please do....but obviously if you sing Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On to the dance mix of My Heart Will Go On then there's no change involved!!! lol

I am REALLY not understanding this challenge....so I could take say Rockstar from Nickelback and sing those lyrics to Songbird from Eva Cassidy? Something like that? Or are we to rewrite lyrics? Or both?! Very confused...sorry! :(
DivaDayna wrote:I am REALLY not understanding this challenge....so I could take say Rockstar from Nickelback and sing those lyrics to Songbird from Eva Cassidy? Something like that? Or are we to rewrite lyrics? Or both?! Very confused...sorry! :(
You have to change at LEAST one part of a song....so you can take a song & change the words....or you can sing the same words but in a different melody to the same backing...or you can sing a capella using the same words, but a different tune.
You can if you choose sing the lyrics to one song on the backing to another...so you could sing Rockstar over Songbird (or vice versa) if you can make it fit. There must be SOME element of the original song still there...either melody, words or backing, but SOME part of it has to be changed.
The EASIEST solution is to change the words, but remember that you're out to impress us, so whatever you change...make it as good as you can :))))
Morning all - oooohhh, seems everyone is being creative and working hard on their songs - it's very quiet in here ;) I'd like to add to Miles' and Katie's tips that to ME changing a song can be more than changing the words or the music - those are obviously superb ways of changing a song, but you can also choose to turn a regular song into a rap piece for instance, or completely change the mood of a song - what I want is to be surprized ;)) I will reward originality and thinking outside of the box so to speak, but the change needs to be pretty major - impress me!! lol - and of course make sure it works well with the song you choose. As usual I will also score you on pitch, timing, emotion and overall feel of the performance, but number one this round is creativity :)) Have FUN, this is your turn to really create something special, let that imagination of yours flow!! And remember, my delicious bananas - all I ask of you is your very very best ;))

You judges are too cool and I totally appreciate all the wonderful feedback. To all the contestants that got cut in previous rounds... You are all wonderful singers with lots of creativity. To all the remaining contestants... You are all fantastic as well and I wish you all the best of luck on your way to the finals. And to each and every one of you... ---------------Ruben-->-
Thinks...I wonder who'll be the first to submit? It's no surprise that nothing has come in as yet as this is no ordinary round....but someone's gonna be first & I wonder who that'll be? ;)

I think what Miles meant in one of his earlier posts was that if you use the backing track of one song but mute it (to sing a capella for instance) and use the track to sing a completely different song on, with new lyrics and new music - then you didn't change the song, then you wrote a completely new one! lol
If I understood YOU right you were talking about singing the lyrics from one song to the music of another? And in my book that would definitely be ok. I guess you can say what we want is for you to change a song, and to be as creative as you can - but we still want it to be apparant what song you changed! If you get what I mean lol...
If I didn't clear anything up feel free to ask again lol... I think both Judge Katie and Judge Miles are working today, and I'll try and get some studying done, but you can always PM your judge or of course post here and wait for us to check in ;)
Have fun all and good luck! :))

Katie > a watched pot never boils over....Good Morning K.A.M ers....and welcome to hell...oops...did i just say that out loud?

Ida-Fina is just elfing around... :)Morning all - oooohhh, seems everyone is being creative and working hard on their songs - it's very quiet in here ;)
I'd like to add to Miles' and Katie's tips that to ME changing a song can be more than changing the words or the music - those are obviously superb ways of changing a song, but you can also choose to turn a regular song into a rap piece for instance, or completely change the mood of a song - what I want is to be surprized ;)) I will reward originality and thinking outside of the box so to speak, but the change needs to be pretty major - impress me!! lol - and of course make sure it works well with the song you choose. As usual I will also score you on pitch, timing, emotion and overall feel of the performance, but number one this round is creativity :)) Have FUN, this is your turn to really create something special, let that imagination of yours flow!! And remember, my delicious bananas - all I ask of you is your very very best ;))

I just wanted to say once more... Thank you all for having me as long as you did. This is a great contest and I wish I had the chance to move forward.

Thinks...I wonder who'll be the first to submit? It's no surprise that nothing has come in as yet as this is no ordinary round....but someone's gonna be first & I wonder who that'll be? ;)
