This is a decent rendition. You have a tendency to sing through your nose. If you could sing more from your diaphragm, if would give your voice a richer quality. Also, your voice in the recording is a bit tinny, adding bass may help.

This isn't great, but it's not awful, either. You could work on your key, and you also tend to be very nasal. You are already aware of the mic issues. Welcome to SS, and keep singing.
This was okay. You could work on your key, and try to control your voice level when you are singing. Also, watch those mic puffs. Good attempt, and welcome aboard!
You key here was a bit better. Try to work on controlling those end notes and your voice level. It's a lot to work on, I know. Good luck, and keep singing!
This sounds fun! Kind of disappointed I haven't check the message boards before now. :) If you have time, I'd love hearing a critique. Here's one of my better recordings (I think! ;) ) I do struggle a bit with the high notes though!

hey i don't know whether i'm tone deaf or not but i definitely can't sing and i can't really tell until after i've recorded it. It sounds terrible in my opinion, and other people say why do I do it. I do it because I want to improve not because I think i'm good. Now be warned I may be extremely bad or maybe the miracle is that i just have an average voice. I'm also quite bad at choosing songs for myself as I'm quite bad I can't seem to get anything on tune.

I’m making a slight change to Straight Up Vocal Critique.
I have decided to do the critiques without the scoring I always use. I will still leave informal comments as always, but no numbered scoring.
This came about because I’m tired of receiving negative PMs from people, mainly those that complain how their score was lower than someone else’s, ect.
So again, I’m going to point out the areas that you did well on, and where you need to work, but leave it at that.

This is very good. I don’t know the song, but your voice fits it perfectly. You could work on your control on those high notes and vocalizing, and your key on the low notes is hit and miss. Well done overall.
Your voice seemed fine for the song, but your key isn’t great here; hit and miss throughout. Consider using less reverb as well. Good luck, keep singing.

Well, like you said, you have trouble with key; it’s pretty bad, to be blunt. You may not be tone deaf, you might just have trouble hearing yourself. If it makes you feel better, my key used to be worse than yours- if I can improve my key, I’m sure you can, as well. And you’re young, so there is plenty of time. The fact that you can hear when you miss the key when you review the recording leads me to believe that you can definitely improve. Seriously consider getting a headset so you can hear your voice coming back at you as you record, and start to correct your key. It will be worth the small investment, since you said you want to get better. If you are having trouble choosing a song for your voice, just try with something very simple, with few key changes and a basic rhythm. “Love Me Tender” by Elvis is a good example. Once you feel comfortable singing a simple tune, you can challenge yourself more. You also need to work on timing and tone, but key is the major issue here. Good luck, and don’t give up or let anyone discourage you.

Like many here, I am fairly new to SS. Not in years really, but in putting anything out there. I know full well I am not that great a singer. That doesn't bother me. What does however is I have entered a few contests recently and while I appreciate everyone stopping by and leaving their oooh's and ahhh's it really doesn't feel all that honest to me. I am guilty of the same thing. There have been a few I wanted to say YIKES!! to, but just didn't have the heart. Most of us here are not here because we are superstars, or have the next to die for voice. We are here for fun. That being said, I would like someone to be honest for a change. I adore music of all kinds and sing constantly. I would just like an honest opinion, so I know what could be better, see if I can work on a few things. I would like to be a bit more comfortable when putting things out here for the world to hear...lol. while it's nice to get the ego stroke, it would be better if someone said hey...I like it but..........

Hi Maryann,
You controlled your notes and your volume level better here. However, your key is still hit and miss; extremely flat in places, especially on the word “alone”. The song suited your voice fine. The recording quality is better than previous submissions. Keep singing, and good luck. Changes rarely happen overnight, of course, but thanks for taking some advice to heart and running with it.

The recording quality, or lack thereof and static really takes away from your voice, but you are aware of that. There are many things that could be causing it.
Anyway, you were interested in your performance, not so much the recording quality. You have a good voice and the song was well suited for you. Your pitch is good and style is very pleasant.
Most of you have seen this by now, but just a reminder:
I love this thread, and I love having you guys here, but it’s time to remind everyone of a few things that are going to make my life easier here, and also keep things flowing along.
1. Please submit only one song every week, at most. At present, I don’t have time for multiple critiques.
2. Submit your one song with the link of course, AND ARTIST AND SONG NAME. I’m sorry to shout, but it’s time-consuming to go digging for that information when you can easily provide me with it in the beginning.
3. Please submit your best song. I’ve had many people comment that they don’t want to submit their best, because they don’t want to be torn apart. Why? I’m going to tear your song apart anyway, but I’ll be nice enough about it. And who knows? Maybe that song will get a perfect score, and then encouraged to be nominated into the Hall of Fame!
4. Questions are welcome. I’ll answer what I can, but remember that I’m not a professional, and have had very little formal training with music, and learn 90% by ear (like many folks here).
5. Keep it pleasant. I’ve had some rude remarks on the thread, as well as rude PMs. Remember that you are here of your own free will, and I’m here to help. Free of charge, I might add. Also, keep in mind that my opinion in regards to music is just that- one person’s opinion. I have a very good ear, and try to be as fair as possible, but if you are serious about your music, it’s always a good idea to get another impartial opinion.
This isn’t bad. The song was well suited for your voice, and your tone is pretty good. Areas to work on are your key- you tend to sing flat- and your phrasing. Also, the recording quality was grainy, there was a lot of static and mic clunking. Good luck, and keep singing.

This isn’t bad. The song was well suited for your voice, and your tone is pretty good. Areas to work on are your key- you tend to sing flat- and your phrasing. Also, the recording quality was grainy, there was a lot of static and mic clunking. Good luck, and keep singing.
