Straight Up Vocal Critique

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed that there have been many posts in regards to vocal critique here. I really enjoy listening to and critiquing music, so this may be the perfect place for me. I don’t claim to be a seasoned professional, but I’ve been in a serious band for a couple of years, and have been singing since I could speak. I also don’t claim to be an awesome singer, but I have a very good ear and try to be as fair as possible. If you would like to have feedback on your singing, please post your link along with the name of the song and the artist. I will be critiquing in 4 areas:

1. Key- how well you hold the tune throughout
2. Tone- how good the quality and richness of your voice is
3. Voice control- how well you control your vibrato and your singing level throughout
4. Song choice- how well the song suits your voice and style

I will be rating you on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being perfect) on each of these areas, and may also throw in a few tidbits of advice/feedback if applicable (or if you ask). I will be very honest and fair and to the point. I will be posting the feedback directly on the page, and will not PM you unless requested, so keep that in mind. Also, I’d prefer not to critique your music if it has effects (including “make me sound better button“), is a duet or has an added harmony. Please, keep it simple. I want to hear your voice as it is-nothing added!

From what I’ve seen, a main problem here is that many of the original posters disappear within a short period of time. I’m will truly do my best to keep this running and try to get back to you within 48 hours or less.

Remember, this is all about critique. If you don’t react well to advice, then this may not be the place for you. I’m really here to tell you how it is, not necessarily what you want to hear. I don’t want to be rude, but please don’t post unless you want honest feedback. I’m not here to make enemies, just to help people.

Also, let’s keep this link professional and clean. I will be courteous to everyone, and expect them to do same.

Jodie, I had a very difficult time hearing you here- your vocals were much quieter than the tracking. I rated it as well as I could, but again, I could barely hear you for most of the song! You seem to have a good voice, why don't you give me another song to rate, or adjust the mixer on this one.

I had mixed emotions about your recording. You really did a pretty good job, but you tend to sing through your nose a lot, and go flat in areas. However, you sounded very good on some of the high notes. Good song choice for your voice.

Flowerface,

You did a very fine job on this difficult song. You certainly have a beautiful high range. My only complaints are that you tend to be a little nasal in your lower range, and you lost some control at the end. But on the whole, a very good rendition!

"Don't look back in anger" is still really quiet on the vocals. Previous decision still stands.

You might need to adjust your mic volume on your computer volume settings. Or, try recording with the music very low and mic midway, and then you can re-adjust in the remix. I will listen again later, and get back to you.

Hooray, I can finally hear you singing! lol. The mixer was just fine this time. This is my final decision. :)
Okay, so you did very well here. You obviously have a good ear, and no trouble staying on key. However, you do sing through your nose a lot and your vibrado is hit and miss. Nice song choice.

Very fine job here, John. You have a wonderful sound and special quality to your voice. You did go slightly flat and lose a little control on some notes, but overall a great rendition, and perfect song for your voice.

Kelly, you did well in both songs, though better in "Love Story". You have a fine voice and you seem to really enjoy what you're doing. You tend to sing a little flat and nasal at times, but considering your age, you're doing quite well.

Et pour ton accent- c'est tres jolie. C'est unique- ne changer pas. (Je parle un peu le Francais, mais pas tres bien.)

You have a nice sounding voice, but you seemed to have trouble staying on key. I had some trouble critiquing based on the fact that the recording quality wasn't the best. Your voice was somewhat distorted through most of the song. You need to lower your mic boost, if possible.

Good job overall. You tended to sing through your nose on a lot on this one, and lost control and key on the chorus part, but a pretty good attempt.

During the first part of the song, your voice was very nasal and it sounded like you were having trouble with that range. However, at the key change, you sounded very, very good, and it was the perfect range for you. If you could get your high range into that quality, it would have been great. Try to push more from your diaphragm, or maybe just do the song in a little lower key.

I enjoyed your song choice- it suited your voice well, and haven't heard this one for awhile. However, you did sing flat through some of the song, and your vibrado wasn't very well controlled.

Really fine performance. There seemed to be a few technical issues throughout the song, but you did great here. If you could tighten your singing a little more, I'm pretty sure you could get a perfect score.
