Since the JW are usually good people I don't wish to offend them, so I hide :) Actually I live in a no soliciting private community and they don't come around here. I've spoken with them and I don't like a religion that "shuns".. The JW's Shun.
I not only answer the door, I ask them in. The reason is I believe all people can learn from an open heart of sharing. I find it inspiring to speak to people that are firm in their beliefs and provide an opportunity for me to learn why they believe as they do.
I answer the door but, I know that if I let them in we can get into a long drawn out conversation so I often tell them I don't have time....I have let them in before though and had a nice convo.
Monique 's friends, please check ic recordings. need opinions.
I always answer the door. I have nothing to hide from. I can ask them just as many (if not more) questions as they ask me. I do invite them in. It usually shocks the heck out of them. I see no reason to be rude. The last group of ladies that came to the door happened by when I was painting my living room red. I was covered in red paint that maybe was mistaken for blood, IDK. They didn't seem to want to come in. LOL They did tho and we had a very nice discussion but they never came back.
No Kappy, I'm not a JW. I was raised Seventh Day Adventist and some of our men were also expected to go door to door to witness. I remember going as a kid and it's a very awkward thing to do. They are only doing what their religion teaches them is right. It can't be easy putting yourself out there and having people be so rude and slam doors in your face.
No Monique, I was talking about Ladylikepsych response making it appear that the JW have her Cell phone number to call if they really need to get in touch with her. Not sure if the last paragraph was her referring in general to often finding it inconvenient to answer phones and doorbells, or if she was speaking in the context of the JW
I won't slam the door in the faces of too many people... I suppose those that harass me trying to follow me into my condo risk that type behaviour, yet if I open the door, I don't slam it.. Even though that does entail me getting up from the computer which of course is VERY inconvenient :)
In the past I'd have to respond that whether I answered the door or ignored the doorbell depended on what I was doing at the time, and the mood I was in.. Sure I've answered it, most today even within the past 15 years will accept "not interested thank you", and let you go at that... Some were taught a tougher sell technique, and I turned my back on those refusing to accept "I'm not interested" when all else failed.
Today I would answer the door to complain that I don't like the fact that active Witnesses are even expected to shun their own parents and children assuming such individuals leave the community.. I think that is VERY wrong. Are all the JW like that ?
ladylikepsych is going to get the kinks worked out...........
lol...no they don't have my phone number...there are times when I am working on a deadline or I am on a roll getting stuff done and do not want my rhythm messed with...

Oh I certainly screen my calls too Tan. I can't ignore the door because people usually can tell if I'm home or not from outside. I'd feel majorly rude not answering the door. I screen my calls all the time. I have no interest in talking to telemarketers. :)
Ah sorry Kappy, I misunderstood.
I don't know about the shunning. My dad had some JW friends that we used to do things with and I never heard that mentioned. Might just be certain "sects"?
Oh certainly, if someone comes to your door and is rude to you, you are justified in slamming the door on them. (that's like hanging up the phone on a obscene phone call). I've never had a JW be rude to me tho.
I don't like "drop ins" either. Personally I am NEVER in a state where I can just spontaneously answer a door without something being interrupted. I always get involved in something requiring a thruline of thought, even if it's typing and thinking about subject matter in the bboards.. I keep myself busy, and like to be prepared for folks that come by.. Drop-ins are pretty rude IMHO... Folks often DO have lives.. try to chill, have to use the bathroom, don't feel like combing hair or using mouthwash, etc.. Too blown out to put our faces on and get dressed :)

My father in law is terrible. When he answers the door to the JW, he tells them he was just going to take a shower, but they are welcome to come in and join him. They leave quickly.
Yeah Monique, but Ari and the JW's might not mix too will in a discussion of "God". Each time Ari said "God" or "Christ", the JW's would correct her and say no-no Ari, it's not "God" it's "Jehovah God".
btw, I'm serious, they don't accept God unless prefaced with Jehovah.
I answer the door, listen to what they have to say for about 2.5 minutes, then interrupt them with "I am Agnostic". Then, I stand there with a smirk on my face wondering how long it will take them to spit out a few more words or walk away. Most of them are so thrown by my response that they actually gasp. Most don't stick around more than thirty seconds after this point in the conversation and walk down the street with blank looks on their faces. *grin*
I don't believe they understand what Agnostic is, therefore, do not know how to respond further.
Edit to add: I forgot to mention that when I open the door, they are greeted with a doormat that has a huge alien head on it. Works like a charm. ;)
My father used to answer the door to any people out doing their churchy thing. They would ask him if he belonged to a church. They usually ran and I don't mean figuratively I mean literally ran when he would respond...."Hell yes! I'm a deacon in the First Saintly Church of the Infidel".
Dunno why they ran. Daddy didn't bite...Well, not often any way and he was up to date on his shots.

Hm, I've never heard them say that Kappy. Jehovah IS one of God's names.
I had a very nice conversation with one of the witnesses that came to my door; but they mainly talked about Jesus being our Saviour and didn't really mention God at all I told them that I knew Jesus very well and had long ago accepted Him as my Savior and that I was very firm in my own beliefs and would be happy to discuss. Their religion actually strongly discourages them to discuss with nonbelievers, so they weren't here long after that.

Agnostic to those that are aware of the meaning can mean "one that is receptive when given a proper and brief (8 hour) synopsis" as long as they commit to being up at 7AM this Sunday for their new carpool group which is taking them to learn even MORE interesting facts on God !!
Is it impolite to invite them in, let them have a seat, and tell them to keep quiet and listen as you sing on singsnap for a few hours ? Continuously asking them "So what did you think ? Honestly ? Give me a Critique, oh wait.. listen to me do this song now"
Bottomline is they are good people that mean well.. Yet I'd need that mouthwash they are bringing because they will otherwise "witness" something they are not at all prepared for when I start projecting my breath moaning about how wrong Shunning family is !!!
My best friend and her family are JW's. If it's them at the door, I invite them in and we visit, 99.9% of the time without discussing religion, just visiting like friends do. Once in a while one or the other of us will ask a question, or bring up the other's religious beliefs, but not often.
I have invited 2 of them in once, years ago. We respectfully disagreed on a few things, and they left. Now, I still get a knock on the door occasionally, but they only ever ask if they can leave some literature with me, and I usually take the literature from them and they go on their way.
this is kinna funny to me.. I was married to a JW for 20 yrs and my fav saying was "you go gitti and dont bother me witti" ahahahah... I didnt know what a JW was until after was about 14... I remember seeing them walking in different areas and people ducking and hiding as if they had a disease or somthing. I remember hearing my mama get into a heated discussion once at the door and she stated "I have my king james bible and thats all I need".. one of the things I did do as an adult was make ma aware where the king james version came from and the stamp of authority placed upon it... she still clinged to her KJ til her dying day as absolute.. wonder how many people have traced the different denominations that have sprouted since the 100 yrs war or the protestant reformation.. its also funny to me that different denominations are ranked in value according by many, the baptist have a good ranking, the mormans had to revamp their reputation and they used those boy on the bikes in the south and still do. The JW's are fairly new, so they have a ways to go yet in being accepted as "norm"... I have also notice a great spring up of what I call mall churches or denominations, ie "Golden gate ministries", "Church of the real word" and others. I have a long time friend that got "saved" he didnt like the way the church he attended operated so he started his own ministry.. I do wonder about one thing... if there was no money in it, how many of the chuch leaders would hold fast to their performance? Would Mr Jakes forsake all his millions to go to a one room shack to prech the gospel or any of the others for that matter... I can vaguely remember when they banned the faith healers from tv back in the early 60's as they had a scam going on, and it seems to be on the rise again... boy human beings are a trip huh? ahahaha just a few thought that ran across my mind... ooo one more I remember once being in the base theater and the national athem played and my wife didnt stand up and how upset everyone got, I even got called to the carpet for it ahahahaha... me I dont care one way or the other.. if I feel like standing I will.. if I dont, then I wont, thats what makes this country great the abilty to be illussional free. True freedom is within

I agree Steven (did I spell it right?). Rudeness is a plague that society seems to have accepted. It's hardly ever necessary to get rude with someone. (tho telemarketers take me to my limit most days.) ;)
Hey!!! I am not rude! How can I be if I don't even know they're at the door? ;-) Seriously, tho, Michael Jackson was (is?) an JW, and he was exempt from door to door, I think I read once. Understandable, lol!

angimac this space for rent, inquire withinMy best friend and her family are JW's.

True freedom is within

cwang, I appreciate your input and do agree (to a point) about some "ministries" being for profit/gain. But let's keep it light, okay? There are other threads in here for the more serious discussions. :)

I answer and try to at least be polite.
Thanks for stopping by, but you are completely wasting your time on my porch. They generally hand me a pamphlet, say thanks, and are on their way.
I'd really hate to be in their shoes !

Monique 's friends, please check ic recordings. need opinions.I agree Steven (did I spell it right?). Rudeness is a plague that society seems to have accepted. It's hardly ever necessary to get rude with someone. (tho telemarketers take me to my limit most days.) ;)

Hey!!! I am not rude! How can I be if I don't even know they're at the door? ;-)
Seriously, tho, Michael Jackson was (is?) an JW, and he was exempt from door to door, I think I read once. Understandable, lol!
