No previous Prize or Banner winners eligible - fresh blood only.
Do not enter if u are currently in another competition
You must be a member of SingSnap for more than 1 month but if you are a newcomer don't despair, I will run another right after this one finishes.
No professional or semi professionals please - no contestants who currently work or have worked in the music business, no contestant with a cd out in the professional field or no ''professional'' singer of any kind.
No singing to backing tracks and then editing after - please sing on a different back track to the song u audition with.
Only a verse and chorus for the initial audition process.
From the intial 40, the contestants will be pared down to 20.
From this stage, contenstants will be asked to sing the full song, again acappella. At this stage you may use the same backing track as the song u choose for the purpose of making sure you can get the whole song in. This comes down to trust and comparison to your previous audition, if there is considerable difference in your ability to hold the pitch or other factors, you will be asked to re-do on a different backing track.
From this point, we will lose 10. Another round of songs will ensue - a list of songs will be issued from which you may choose. From this 10 we will whittle it down to 5.
The last 5 can once again sing a song of their own choosing and to a backing track. I and a panel of judges will decide on the final three, that is first, runner-up and third place getter.
This is going to be short and sweet. The rules are strict because I want the prize to be worth winning. I want fresh blood because I get sick and tired of the same old brilliant and often professional singers doing the same old thing - that is winning everything within sight. This is truly a chance to see some different names and faces on the competition boards. I hope those that have missed out in previous competions will support this because, if it is successful, I will run more of them with a similiar theme......giving many more people the chance to be heard and acknowledged here on SS.

I'll give it a go! Hope you will clarify some of these rules though. Not really clear about how we sing the song with a different track? How do we get the words to the song we are singing?
Reply by In-viz-ible on December 1, 2008 at 2:21 AM
Mmmmm hadn't thought of that but how about this, u open a second window and pull up the lyrics of the song u want to sing from one of the lyrics websites. Just announce the song you are singing so we know what it is as obviously it will be different to the backing. I just wanted to create an audition atmosphere - kinda like Idol, where those initial stages are unaccompanied by music. If it is too hard, you can use the backing of the song u want to sing, turn the music down and go for it BUT remember, no cheating.

I just saw this contest after entering another one, which hasn't started yet. Can I still enter this one. I can delete my other entry, if necessary. I am not a professional, have only sung one song in another contest, but, didn't even place in the top ten. So, basically, I haven't won anything on SS. If I mute the sound track from a song listed in Singsnap, will that be accepted as an entry? ~Tracy~

I would love to do this contest. HOwever, I am involved in another contest at the time and it seems that the rules prohibit that...so i will wait till next time. Have fun

Hi Tracy and donni
Okay, wow, am I learning as I go or what.....lesson one, u have to be a little bit flexible. You can both join and sing...inspite of both being in other competitions..... I really wanted to encourage some new faces onto the competition scene but I haven't had a huge response SO that works in your favour. Do not pull out of your other competitions, I'm not trying to be dogmatic and PLEASE, if you know any other interested parties who don't traditionally do competitons, invite them along.
And yes shygirl, you can sing Abba but acappella style only.
Reply by donniwashburn on December 2, 2008 at 7:06 AM
Okay, count me in/ Please let us know if we need to submit a audition now or later. As I read the rules I though it meant now, but I do not see any other songs yet.
Flagged and will check back later! Thanks for letting me join you!!

on recording acapella: another option is NOT to use the 'stereo mix' or 'what you hear' (depending on your audio system)... that way the accompanying music will not be heard when you record the song

behave_lang wrote:on recording acapella: another option is NOT to use the 'stereo mix' or 'what you hear' (depending on your audio system)... that way the accompanying music will not be heard when you record the song
I think the idea here is to sing acapella and not "fake it" - therefore you should sing a song acapella on the backing track of another with the music off to prove ther is no cheating.
Reply by In-viz-ible on December 2, 2008 at 5:26 PM
yes, I guess that is the advantage of singing acappella - you can sing anything you like, even songs that are not here on SS. Be creative, I would like this to be an opportunity to not only hear some fresh voices but also some fresh songs (although SS's library is huge, I'm sure no one has sung them all anyway lol). Sing a song that will present to your voice to it's best advantage. We are not all Celine Dion's......some of us might be say, Bob Dylan, and that's fine, we want to hear ur style and judging will be based to the best of our panel's ability, on things such as pitch, timing, emotion etc etc.
Now, I need some help from you guys. I am not at all technically savvy but I need to put up the little 'you have been heard banners' as we start to get entries......can anybody tell me how to go about doing this.... Your help will be greatly appreciated.
I see LadyLexx has started the ball rolling and to her I say thank you. Will listen and leave acknowledgement once I have my banner situation sorted. Thanks heaps guys n' gals.

Oh by the way, thanks to the members for their discussion on technical issues of recording 'acappella'. That is really helpful, not only to me but to anyone else who might be struggling a bit how to record themselves sans the music. You are doing a terrific service.

Just to make the process transparent I will let you know we are judging in 5 area's of your vocals.
These are pitch, emotion, interpretation/delivery, diction and timing (particularly in the stages where u are singing without music). Each of these sections will be scored out of 10 to give an overall scrore out of 50. This scoring is mostly for us, the judges, to give ourselves benchmarks for what we are hearing. I will not reveal the score here on the thread but if you are curious you can pm. Please remember judging is subjective and like any contest, is only a reflection of the judges opinion. Did u know, Tom Jones was dissed and told not to give up his day job when he started out and yet went on to experience a great and successful career. Most of us are on here for fun but I dont want to break anybody's self image if they feel their score wasn't what they thought it should be.
The plus to all this scoring is that it gives you a benchmark too and knowledge of area's that you might need to work a little extra on for your next contest or just for your own personal improvement and satisfaction.
