Okay, for those reading this, I have a personal message and advice. I lost a friend, Jess, April 30th of this year. If you have a friend or a loved one that may seem troubled or depressed, don't ignore it. Do something. Anything. Tell someone. You don't know how that will help. All someone sometimes needs is someone to reach out to them. Someone to tell them they hear them.
If you are reading this, tell someone else on SingSnap (or outside of SingSnap) about it and have them visit this thread. I really want this to get around. Comment on your thoughts or feelings. The important thing here is that the message gets out and it's acknowledged so others may benefit from this. It's such a simple thing to do really, we sometimes just don't want to get involved or stop for a second to recognize someone is reaching out to you. I just want to do more than I have in the past. Remember, there are no "do overs" with this. Do your best the first time. It's not just about Jess, it's about everyone you know and care about.
Now, take a second and think of your friends and family members. Think about how they are acting. Is it their usual self or do they seem different, seem sad, seem depressed, seem distant, seem "out of touch"? Did they go from outgoing to sheltered? Some real simple things to think about that just take a second.
Take action before they do, please.
I've dedicated two songs to Jess on here. The first was recorded the day he passed away. "It's So Hard To Goodbye (To Yesterday)" by Boyz 2 Men.
I don't care if you comment on these songs. I just want my message to be heard. I want to be heard. I want to help you help someone else by giving you this message.
One last last thing. Copy and paste this into a reply message to this thread and type your name if you have or intend to help in this cause.
------------------------- I promise to tell at least one person about the issues of suicide. I will do my part by continuing to keep my eyes and ears open to my friends and family's well-being. I will take action. And If I ever have these same feelings, I will share my feelings with someone and make sure they understand me.

Thank you for your time and remember to pass it along. It's important to me. It's important to you.
thanks for posting this shawn :) i myself fall into depression...but it never really gets that bad.. gonna go listen to your second song..ive heard the first before :(
Okay... You have my full attention. I'm sure by now you've read the PM I sent you. Believe me... I know where you're coming from and most importantly... I know where you want to go with this. I agree with you 100%. If you know someone in this type of situation, don't let it go... don't turn your back on them... don't ignore them... Even if you say something as simple as, "If you want to talk... I'm here for you...on your terms." Doing something is better than not doing anything at all. And because I know what you're going through my friend, I will make it my job to help spread this thread. SS-Land is a commuinity of friends. That was me a few years ago. And it seemed nobody noticed. I know that pain. Out of the blue my angel reached out to me and helped me find the help I needed before it was too late. A friend of mine took his own life last year and it was a shock to pretty much everyone. He had just gotten a promotion at work and was in discussions of purchasing a home. I think it is important to tell everyone you love just how much they mean to you and how imporant they are in your life... and often. We need to prevent those we care about feeling this way... Great Message.

Good job Shawn for this topic[/quote]
Very powerful thread Shawn! It really hits home. I have lived with a wife with suicidal tendencies for 11.8 years. There is nothing scarier than seeing someone trying to take their own life, especially with four kids around.
What I did was have her call the crisis prevention hotlines. I just googled this one..
They DO work, I know from personal experience with my wife. I still worry about her safety even though now were are going though a separation and divorce. I just couldn't live in an abusive relationship any longer.
She also had a personal therapist.
I have never been suicidal, but I think everyone goes through depression at sometimes. I myself have a low grade depression now and just don't feel like singing for example. The key is COMMUNICATE. Friends, family, etc. You can get out it. Nothing is more precious than the life given to us by God. Don't loose it !!!!
My sister was a "SUICIDE HOTLINE OPERATOR" for a few years and just KNOW that anyone can CALL toll free they are trained specialists that KNOW how to deal with all of the diverse and horrible ISSUES some have and that are in HORRIFIC pain. So please remember that every city, state, county and throughout the world has this OPTION! I am so sorry about your friend, my condolences! Sue

Hi Ya Sue. Do you know if non-suicidal people can call too ??? I think they can right ? I never called but had my wife call a few times. Can the operators give advice to concerned loved ones on how to help a suicidal person ????
KrazyKen wrote:Do you know if non-suicidal people can call too ??? I think they can right ? I never called but had my wife call a few times. Can the operators give advice to concerned loved ones on how to help a suicidal person?
Ken - Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. I'm sure any of the suicide hotlines will be able to at least provide a caller that is calling for someone's safety good advice and a path to take. These are free services and should be willing to help.
I have a National Suicide Hotline for anyone that needs someone to talk to.
1-800-SUICIDE OR 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-784-2433) (1-800-273-8255)
These numbers are toll-free, open 24-hours a day / 7 days a week for the United States. I'm sure other countries have their own national numbers. Just search them on the net and you'll find local and national numbers.
Hello MegaByte, Good that u post it here on singsnap. That someone needs to talk with a friend or family. I know what to do more maybe. When they bad or sad he/she can look for sites to talk with other people who has the same problem. I did this. And so you get the feeling there are more people who do understand that. you can write things what's on your mind and tips what to do. That helps sometimes. but I don't know what to do more. I use a medicine so I do not feel depressed or want to hurt myself ot think I want to die.. I'm glad you post this.
Much strength with your lost friend. (sorry for my english, not so good)

It's been a long day and it's time I take a break and get some rest and I'll check in Sunday morning.
Thank you all who have visited and posted a message. If this is your first time reading through this, please be sure to comment and/or take the vow that you see throughout the thread.
All - I've added a yellow ribbon to my avatar for the time being. A yellow ribbon signifies awareness of suicide (as well as a few other awareness causes).
If you are interested in getting a ribbon attached to your avatar, please send me a PM and I can go over the details on what I'll do for you. Free, of course, it will only take a few seconds for me to add for you and send back to you for posting.
This may be a good way to spread awareness. Even if you only keep it on your avatar for a short period. ;-)

I lost a cousin a few years ago, she ended her young life at 15 years old. Noone had a clue, she kept her depression a close guarded secret even from her closest friends. If I could add something to this thread it would be..teens are very vulnerable..some of the hardest years of their lives because often times they cannot see beyond the day to day..that life has ebbs and tides. They may not realize the will have a happy future. Help your teens learn to express themselves. Allow them to have feelings and accept them for who they are!!Make sure they are close to someone to confide and talk to.
We will never understand why my neice left us, and this makes it so much harder for the family. If the signs arent there it only makes me think: remind the people in your life how much you cant live without them. Do it alot.
Thanks for reaching out for a worthy cause. My condolences to you, Shaun.
I just had a moment, I'm ok, really. I'ts such a difficult subject you know and I realize many people think that if someone wants to take their own life we cannot stop them but you are right.. we need to see the cries for help, too and do something. I'm not going to talk about it anymore today but I will follow the creed and do what I can when I am feeling stronger. Hugs everyone!!

You have done more than I could have ever expected or asked of anyone. Thank YOU!
Hey Shawn I know exactly what you're goin through bud I've had it happen to me as well there are some songs on here that I'd love to sing that have that kind of message in them but they are not there I have sang those songs as well and I'm thinking about redoing them now to fit that specific message. Thanx alot.
Good to see this thread had more visitors today, but I'd love to hopefully see even more visitors and contributers. If you are here and you do take something away from this experience, please pass it on to someone else so that they may benefit also.
Looks like I've got some SingSnap friends lookin' out for the thread and helping keeping it visible with some bumps. Much appreciated. These bumps are keeping this topic visible and at easily accessible which in turn is accomplishing my goal of awareness. Thanks to Jenna, Annie and Doc for checking back in and doin' the ~bump~. That's taking action!
I'm there for ya Shawn just Shawn! This topic is just as important to you as it is for me...
I might even pluck up the courage one of these days to tell you all why.. but for now.. plz trust me...
... this is a topic that needs recognition.. is there anyway we can make this a sticky? Cause if any sticky was deserved,. it is surly this one.
I would also like to provide the following link to everyone out there reading this. I know how hard it is to talk to friends or family members about thoughts of suicide, depression and inside anger issues. If you are feeling these ( or can pass the link to someone you think needs it ) please click and read... it's a 5 min read, but well worth it
Thanks again Shawn just Shawn for creating this thread!
I wanted to thank Boots for that wonderful song and sharing it with us!
Blessed Be to you and your family and friends, and prayers to the family and friends to all our lost brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, children, friends...
The list goes on and on...remember.. noone is outside the reach of depression and mental illness.. plz don't ignore the signs.
Hugs Annie and Hugs Jen. Jen just remember before you can get to the top of the mountain we all have to come through the valley below. Crossing that pain you hold in your valley one day will be tough but I promise you the view from the top of the mountain is much better. :0) Take your time crossing the valley ....just make sure you do cross it hun :0)

I don't care if you comment on these songs. I just want my message to be heard. I want to be heard. I want to help you help someone else by giving you this message.
One last last thing. Copy and paste this into a reply message to this thread and type your name if you have or intend to help in this cause.

I promise to tell at least one person about the issues of suicide. I will do my part by continuing to keep my eyes and ears open to my friends and family's well-being. I will take action. And If I ever have these same feelings, I will share my feelings with someone and make sure they understand me.
Kevin
I will also share my faith in Jesus Christ, giving hope to lost hearts, sharing just how much they are loved, and the bright future they have with God ;)
My uncle, took his own life a few years ago........
Good job Shawn for this topic

Very powerful thread Shawn! It really hits home. I have lived with a wife with suicidal tendencies for 11.8 years. There is nothing scarier than seeing someone trying to take their own life, especially with four kids around.
What I did was have her call the crisis prevention hotlines. I just googled this one..
http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/
They DO work, I know from personal experience with my wife. I still worry about her safety even though now were are going though a separation and divorce. I just couldn't live in an abusive relationship any longer.
She also had a personal therapist.
I have never been suicidal, but I think everyone goes through depression at sometimes. I myself have a low grade depression now and just don't feel like singing for example. The key is COMMUNICATE. Friends, family, etc. You can get out it. Nothing is more precious than the life given to us by God. Don't loose it !!!!
Thanks Shawn,
- KK

Thanks,
- KK

Ken - Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. I'm sure any of the suicide hotlines will be able to at least provide a caller that is calling for someone's safety good advice and a path to take. These are free services and should be willing to help.
I have a National Suicide Hotline for anyone that needs someone to talk to.
1-800-SUICIDE OR 1-800-273-TALK
(1-800-784-2433) (1-800-273-8255)
These numbers are toll-free, open 24-hours a day / 7 days a week for the United States. I'm sure other countries have their own national numbers. Just search them on the net and you'll find local and national numbers.

Hello MegaByte,
Good that u post it here on singsnap.

Don't be sad. Turn that frown upside-down. Let's turn these negatives into a positive and spread the word of awareness. :-)

Crossing that pain you hold in your valley one day will be tough but I promise you the view from the top of the mountain is much better. :0) Take your time crossing the valley ....just make sure you do cross it hun :0)
