Several laptop manufacturers have disabled the "stereo mix" function (for what insane reason, I don't know), but I found a way to get it back in order to have proper recording.

Visit this link and download the whopping 95mb file. It's big, but if you want to record, it'll be worth it:

I have a desktop with Sigmatel sound card. I've been having trouble recording and I don't have "stereo mix" function on my sound options. Would it be safe to say this fix would work on my desktop pc or is this only meant for laptops? Thanks, Banshee

Hey Banshee. This should work for you too. Just make sure you turn your Input Monitor up (which you will get with the download) so you will be able to record voice and music at the same time.

There are three downloads on that. Do all three or the first one? I'm excited, I hope this will help; I will let you know.

I have a Sigmatel soundcard. I did the download, and ended up w/ no sound at all. So then I followed a link that took me to a site where I followed the bottom of the page instruction to kind of "hack" my computer to enable the stereo mix. I got the stereo mix to show up on my Recording Properties and I got my sound back...but even though Stereo Mix is checked (and not Mic) the results are no different. Maybe I need even more options.

No, my recordings are the same as they were, sadly...*wah!*...

To get my sound back, I did the hacking thing...I think! I can't really remember it has been too long since I did all of that. I've slept since then, LOL...I have Stereo Mix now but I don't think it is operable. I did not do the entire hack that that lady posted, I only did the one at the very bottom, the one that was alot simpler. When I feel brave, I might do the entire hack she posted...

I have both a Sigmatel and Sounblaster card due to recommendations from Dell. I still have no mixing capabilities yet, but this is a new computer and I have reps at Dell working on a permanent/safe fix for this issue I have attempted a couple of the said fixes listed to no avail. I've noticed that I'm not the only one having these issues and while Windows XP offered the controls needed, Windows Vista does not. I will follow this through and post a solution once I find one. I've brought the Dell rep. here via Dell connect and he hasn't recommended any of the fixes listed, but states that if Dell/Microsoft cannot find and fix this issue, he will seek a third party vendor that will. Meanlwhile I still record on my old computer w/ XP:-)))) I will be sure to let everyone know what Dell and I come up with. Till then. Peace!

For some reason, (I still can't record w/ headphones on) but my background track is showing up alot better on the setup I currently have. I've been through so much adjustment that I don't know what I did but it is working better. I'm still using the mic in between the speaker method but it's sounding decent, er ..hearable anyways :)

I know it's been a while but I thought I'd give a little update. I wasn't able to get the download JoxerJen suggested to work for me... I lost all sound and had to revert back to the old drivers for Sigmatel. Then I went out and bought a Soundblaster external soundcard... which is pretty cool because I can use it for this site and KSolo, then switch my pc's soundcard settings to use the SigmaTel for Ksuperstar (I could use either soundcard for Ksuperstar but I much prefer the SigmaTel's sound for that particular site) Long story short, now I've got the best of both worlds! :)

I used this solution on a friend's Dell on the weekend. I installed the 4601K drivers from the LG site and the Stereo Mix was enabled without drama! :)

Note that external cards can sometimes also have trouble. Don't buy a soundcard without the ability to return it in case!

edit: it was a desktop, not notebook, but these drivers still worked.

Hi, i used the registry hack on my dell with the SigmaTel to enable the mic to appear on the playback properties panel. It is muted when playing back by default and will not appear, but the hack explains how to enable it. It was on the thread at the bottom of the set up wizard page. The sound isn't great but it works.

Argh, I cannot hear the song at all, the only way you can hear the song is if I place the mic right in front of the speakers and sing beside it. Very frustrating...

REGISTRY EDIT ... I discovered that my dell laptop 2650
with sigmatel sound card needed extra changes... 1. Go to Start menu and click on Run. Type 'regedit' without quotes and click OK to open the Registry.
2. At the top of the list, highlight My Computer.
3. Under the Edit menu, select Find.
4. Type in 'DisableMicFromPlayback' without quotes and click 'find next'.
5. Highlight DisableMicFromPlayback. Right click on it and select Modify.
6. Highlight 01 and change to 00. Click OK.
7. REPEAT STEPS 3 TO 6 UNTIL ALL HIDDEN KEYS ARE CHANGED TO 00... (I had 3 or 4)
8. Exit the Registry and restart the computer.

Next, configure the system mixer:
1. Open Volume Control by right clicking on the speaker icon on the taskbar, or go to Start/Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices Properties/Advanced (button).
2. Under the Options menu, select Properties.
3. Under show the following volume controls check the box next to Microphone. Click OK.
4. A mic control appears in the Volume Control. Make sure the mute box is unchecked.

Hope this helps some of you.... aloha .... tone-def

Hi all! I am completely frustrated with my SigmaTel sound card! I have tried all of these suggestions and still haven't gotten very far. I actually installed an Intel driver and I do have the stereo mix on my sound controls now, but still it won't record the music unless I have the music turned up and the mic near the speakers. I have a Dell XPS M170 with a SigmaTel C-Major card. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was told to buy a sound mixer as an external device, but they are a bit pricey. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

L.

Oh sorry, I do use a headphone with mic and have used the same one the whole time I been here. This problem with no music during playback just started this week.
well i just went to listen to my old recordings and guess what? i cant here the music on them either.
now i lost my voice recording, and i didn't even do anything

I have a new mic, but am stuck with this Sigmatel.

So, I guess my best bet would be to a buy soundcard, right? Except there are so many types, I wouldn't know which one to get.

Also, I read on another thread that another thing a person with a Sigmatel card could do is to connect a karaoke machine to their PC. I have a Karaoke machine as well...but am not quite sure how to connect to the PC.

I lost my sound as well when I downloaded from the link that Jen suggested (for some ppl it's been working, for others, like me, it's been a disaster).

First, I restarted my PC. The PC Wizard actually recognized that I didn't have this driver, but for some reason, when it tried to re-install, I kept getting an "error" message.

So, what I did was go to Dell.com and searched "downloads." The next page it went to had a link to "Drivers and Downloads." Then, I chose my PC model and model type. From there, it listed all drivers and downloads appropriate for my PC model. I just clicked on the "audio" tab and the sigmatel driver was listed, ready for me to re-install.

I'm no computer pro, so I can't say this will work for everyone who lost their sound, but it worked for me.

On my older laptop (about 2 years old) I had recording capabilites but still was not happy with the sound...so I bought an external Audigy2 sound blaster card (not sure if that's the proper name for it) but anyway I love the way it works and sounds.

I just recently acquired a new laptop with the dinky SigmaTel sound card...could not believe that with all the bells and whistles I could not record! anyway I use my external sound card and it works wonderfully. I love the extra capabilities that this card gives me. At this stage of addiction, I can't be without recording capabilities.

i use a external mic amp mixer any mixer should work .even a karaoke machine with rca jack outputs . i bought a 4.00 y cord that has two rca jack plugs going into the output on your mixer .the other end is a mini jack which i plug into my mic input on my computer . the mic is than plugged into my mic mixer . than i have a y connect plugged into my headphones that have two outputs for minijacks i have my headphones plugged in one and my other is routed back into my mic mixer that gives me my sound and along with the mic it mixes rather well you could do the same with any mic mixer . hope that helps someone who may not have a budget to purchase a new setup . i have found mic mixers at pawn shops pretty cheap . radio shack has a small one . you just need 2 channels one for the voice and one for the music and those 2 y connectors are about 4.00 each and your set .

Heya. I'm running XP on a Sony Vaio with a Sigma Tel sound card. I tried running everything through my usual recording set-up which is mic through my effects box, plugged into an indigo audio card (I know, convoluted but I normally need the burly sound processor in the box and it all fits the cables I have) + headphones plugged into the sound card. I got no music in teh actual recording but lots of vocals. Tried same mic/box/headphones directly into my stock Vaio microphone input and switched my audio controls to the Sigma Tel....same problem.

Any ideas? Anyone else here use a Vaio?

I just bought a Creative Soundblaster Sound Card at Walmart for $30. I have a Dell Dimension with a built in Sigmatel Sound card. All you have to do is drop the new sound card into an available slot and download the software. No uninstall is needed on the Sigmatel. Now I have great audio! This is the best fix in my opinion - just buy a new sound card and overide that Sigmatel piece of junk!!! :)
