This challenge is open to all. It runs until Tuesday, August 21st at 8PM EDT. It's purpose is to give people a forum to have their songs heard. There is no judging involved. Everyone who participates is a winner. New challenge themes are announced by 3PM EDT Friday and 8pm Sunday and Tuesday.
PLEASE READ THESE RULES AND THE THEME DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE POSTING
1. Post ONE OR TWO songs that fit the theme (one is preferred but two are ok). If you have to, you may post a third and final one on the second day of the challenge. You may post a new song or one that was already recorded. You do not have to post a song to participate.
**2. For EACH song you post, listen to at least THREE other people’s songs during EACH day of the challenge. That means, if you post 2 songs you should listen to 6 others each day (12 total). Listen to as many as you wish but make sure you listen to at least three each day per song you post. Listening is the most important part of this challenge. Supporting and experiencing others is what it’s about.
3. We prefer that you listen to the whole song rather than listening to 10 seconds so there's no need to try to listen to everyone. Try not to listen to the same people every day. Give new people a chance as well. The quality here is so good, you may find yourself doing more listening than you expected.
4. Although you may choose to post a tiny graphic with your comments, we ask that you do not post large glittery graphics as feedback.
5. Come back to the current challenge thread and write about your experiences. Mention songs you heard or anything else that strikes you, suggestions, etc., or not. Completely up to you. And please go back each day and listen to others. That's the most important part of this.
6. You don't need to post a song to listen but you need to listen if you post a song. It's best to post earlier in the challenge. But you can post up until the end. Just be aware that the closing hours of the challenge are better suited to listening than trying to squeeze in a last minute post.
Hi, everyone! Now that the emotional array in our last challenge is behind us, it's time to do one simply for fun!
It is a great truth that we are all a product of the things we experience in life, and especially those things we experienced in our formative years. Today's challenge takes us back to the music of my teenage years as we delve into New Wave music from the late 1970s/early-mid 1980s.
Here's a link to the definition of New Wave Music:
ABC, Adam and the Ants, a-ha, B-52s, Bananarama, The Bangles, Toni Basil, Berlin, Blondie, Boomtown Rats, David Bowie, Bow Wow Wow, The Cars, The Cure, Elvis Costello, Culture Club, Dead or Alive, Depeche Mode, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Devo, Divinyls, Thomas Dolby, Duran Duran, The English Beat, Eurythmics, Falco, Fine Young Cannibals, The Fixx, A Flock of Seagulls, Peter Gabriel, Gary Numan, General Public, The Go-Go's, Haircut 100, Human League, Billy Idol, INXS, J. Geils Band, Joe Jackson, Howard Jones, Kajagoogoo, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, The Knack, Nick Lowe, Madness, Men at Work, Modern English, The Motels, Oingo Boingo, OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), Pet Shop Boys, The Plimsouls, The Police, The Pretenders, The Psychedelic Furs, R.E.M., The Romantics, The Selecter, Pete Shelley, Simple Minds, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Soft Cell, Spandau Ballet, The Specials, Squeeze, The Stray Cats, Talking Heads, Talk Talk, Tears for Fears, Thompson Twins, U2, Ultravox, Wall of Voodoo, Kim Wilde, X and XTC.
If any of the above bands (or others you think of) had hits that were outside of the time specified, please do not include them. We are looking for an era - not a particular band.
Oh, this is gonna be fun!! If this ain't your thang, you're about to learn about some really cool bands and songs from my era!

OMG this is FAB!!!! I was a music journalist working on Smash Hits when these bands were around, so I met lots of them! It was a wonderful, rich, exciting time in music and I was at the centre of it. This is going to bring back wonderful memories. Thank you Scribbly!!!!!
Yep. That's why we call it a challenge as well as a showcase and a thingy.
This is a great period of music and it was the era that MTV launched during. Some of these bands went on to be Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame types and many went on to be one hit wonders. I'm sure there's songs in there for everyone. Looking forward to this. Now, what the heck am I going to do???

This is such a cool song from that era - loved the make-up and the dancing from that time. My favorite was Joe Jackson but I only sound good singing his stuff when I'm just singing along with the radio. Anyways, this is from Blondie.
Only a few here so far but I've listened and been very impressed and surprised to hear songs that I've pretty well forgotten about. They are great renditions. Thanks to the 3 people above me who posted. I'll get to others later. Cheers, Beatrice

Okay I wasn't going to post this because I just heard a very good rendition of it in the thread, but this is a duet to which I just added a little bit of harmony. My friend Helen (Madamblue) is really the star here, and she sings this so well that I wanted to share it with you all.
walkingstick would like some pb if you don't mind nance.....
You go away for the day to work and you come back and there's another challenge already.
This time I'm not going to do my usual OMG I can't do this, I'm going to sulk for an hour thing that seems to happen to me at the beginning of every challenge, because I always come around in the end anyway LOLOL.
So, despite my resistence to all change and everything new I'm just going to jump in with both feet (though I must say that I know very few of the bands listed above and the ones I do know, I'm not familiar with the songs, so this could prove interesting).
I have to laugh at Scribbly's comment about this being music from her teenage years, as I was in late 20s to early 30s in this era. You young pup you ;-)
I just luv this theme!! I used to work in a record store back in them days and would be jammin out! Brings back the memories!! Here's a song by Berlin - The Metro
I love this choice Scrib! It's going to be so much fun to hear these. And FUN is what we all need after a weekend of introspection.
Here's mine.
I wish I could add the effects to this that are on the original. On the original, the singer at times sounds like he's on a phone. Whatever that effect is called. I am going to learn how to use Garage Band and someday redo this one like the original. So, in the meantime - it's the birth of MTV all over again (oh, I miss those days).
I'm gonna try to use all true-to-the-era slang and idioms in my comments.
Wow, I'm noticing a distinct dearth of songs from these bands and this era. Singsnap's got no love for the 80s. :(
No Der Kommissar (After the Fire)? No Forever Young (Alphaville)? No Digging Your Scene (Blow Monkeys)? And I've only touched on bands beginning with A and B.
