2007, Bono and The Edge from U2 made a surprise appearance at a charity gig, playing four songs before 250 people. The London gig at the Union Chapel was held as part of the Mencap's Little Noise Sessions.

2005, Dan McTeague a Toronto MP tried to have 50 Cent barred from entering Canada to perform a series of concerts later this year. McTeague had sent a letter to Immigration Minister Joe Volpe claiming that the controversial rapper shouldn't be permitted to cross the border because he promotes gun violence.

2005, US singer songwriter Chris Whitley died of lung cancer aged 45. Whitley earned critical success with his 1991 album ‘Living with the Law’ and toured with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.

2003, Westlife scored their twelfth UK No.1 single with their version of the Barry Manilow song 'Mandy.'

2003, Jay-Z started a three week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘The Black Album.’

2001, Singer O.C. Smith died aged 65. Famous for his 1968 US No.1 single 'Little Green Apples' and 1968 UK No.2 single 'The Son Of Hickory Holler's Tramp'.

1996, The Prodigy scored their second UK No.1 single when 'Breathe' went to the top of the charts for two weeks.

1995, US Soul singer Junior Walker died. (1966 US & UK Top 20 single 'How Sweet It Is.' 1969 US No.4 single 'What Does It Take, To Win Your Love').

1995, Garbage, made their UK live debut at The Forum, Kentish Town, London.

1994, Tommy Boyce, singer, songwriter, committed suicide. (1968 US No. 8 single with Bobby Hart, 'I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite', also wrote 'Last Train To Clarksville', 'I'm Not Your Stepping Stone' and 'Scooby- Doo Where Are You.' Sold over 40m records.

1992, US Country singer Roy Acuff died aged 89. In 1962 he was the first living artist elected to the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

1991, Genesis scored their 5th UK No.1 album with 'We Can't Dance', featuring the singles 'Jesus He Knows Me' and 'I Can't Dance'.

1983, Tom Evans from Badfinger committed suicide by hanging himself. Evans co-wrote 'Without You' a hit for Harry Nilson and Mariah Carey.

1976, appearing live at Accrington Town Hall, England and billed as Europe's leading hard rock band, The Scorpions.

1976, ten hours after his last arrest, Jerry Lee Lewis was nicked again after brandishing a Derringer pistol outside Elvis Presley's Graceland's home in Memphis, demanding to see the 'King'.
