One-taker, Normal. Feature. This is a tech track; in other words, it demonstrates the differences in technique. Someone asked me a minute ago, 'What's the difference between 'belting' it and whatever else?' Which is a GREAT question. But first, a little Singin' 101. Belting is a technique or style of singing, but it DOES use a specific part of the vocal range called the middle voice -- for guys, it's lower, and mezzos / sopranos, it's higher. That's why everyone's jaw drops whenever Beyonce belts a G5, since that's high, considering. For most chicas, (like myself) it takes work to be able to belt higher without going into straight mix-voice (which sounds operatic, in my case) and for some voices, it's just really not possible, or healthy. So. The best thing to know about belting is, UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN TAUGHT HOW BY A PROFESSIONAL, DON'T ATTEMPT IT. There's a lot of people out there who think they're belting when they're screaming. Rule #1, guys: if it hurts, you're probably doing it wrong, and should stop. Don't strain. Strain is not passion. I get very into my music, and so you're going to see some intensity in my face. Unless I'm sick and going for one of my usual notes, I make it a policy never to strain. It's a good policy! Anyhow, belting is a technique used for certain types of songs (especially on Broadway) to give them power and depth. They otherwise lack it, and it can greatly weaken the overall performance - as I've demonstrated here. Does it still kinda sound pretty? Well, sure. Mix-voice is the 'standard default' for most music. It blends the chest and head nicely so that you're able to go in any direction you really want to. But it's not, in other words, 'musical theatre' voice, or 'belting' voice. The increased air pulled from the diaphragm to give you that LOUD, projected, controlled sound, is what carries across a theatre. It's really more pragmatism than style, but it's become a style, and pop singers, despite being an inch from the frickin' microphone, love to use it. Useless trivia: Pop stars actually don't belt in the studio unless they have a specific setup for it. They sing using mix-voice, otherwise it'll seriously blow the mic. In concerts, however, they do. This is why people typically sound very different when they perform live versus studio -- and those who don't are pretty incredible, as they've honed their technique to such a degree, they can 'studio perform' live. But they're rare, and now it's a debate as to whether it's preferable, or just a style choice. OKAY. ENOUGH BABBLING. ;) Thanks to any who've listened! I think I've made a good case for 'why this song must be belted'. ;)

One-taker. Normal. Feature. Wow. Don't belt with morning voice, kids. It ain't pretty -- as I have demonstrated. Okay. I THINK I can do this in Normal again now that my belting voice is slowly recovering. We shall see. Like said, this is different for me in full belt, mostly straight tone, as I'm SUCH a natural operatic vibrato kinda gal. Alas, this character is SO not opera, and very little vibrato. ;) Thanks to those who listened! It's pitchy and pantsy, but standing, oh, does standing help.

One-taker, Lower. Feature. Still missing those low notes! And I need to watch it; I'm just narrowly missing my hub's cold over here. Time to warm-up, or take a break. I should not be losing my voice after a couple of rounds of un-warmed-up belting. Time for some Throat Coat, too. Happy Turkey Day! Thanks to any who've listened. Apologies for the pitchiness. That happens when your voice is weakening. D'oh!

It's like I need to learn that second verse. Heh. One-taker. High. Feature. I'd never heard this song until someone used it for one of those fan-videos on YouTube featuring two of my favourite characters from the old show 'The Pretender'. It fit them incredibly well -- and I loved the song from that point on. (Which was several years ago.) Never done it in High before. Super-pitchy. I'm going to try Low / 1OctaveUp, as I tend to roll. ;) Thanks to any who've stopped by. Have a lovely Turkey Day!
