Solo today Beautiful song and not an easy one to sing. It holds many a sweet memory for me. Early on in our young love, my then fiance and I were separated from early winter of one year through the winter of the next year. That fall before he was shipped overseas was one of the most beautiful times of my life with him. I missed him so much I thought for sure my heart would break. Anyway, I hope I can convey some of the feelings as I remember that fall and what it means to me. Thanks for stopping by for a listen. I appreciate it.

I wanted to share the loss of my Mother whom I love so very much. You may recall, she is beautiful to me, has the voice of an angel and an unconditional heart of gold, but I want to share more about her this time. I chose this song and particular arrangement for more than one reason. I remember my Mother especially loving the fall season and the beautiful colors it brought to upstate NY trees. My Mom passed away August 7, 1986 when my Daughter was only 3 months old and my Son 2 years old. My family was new, but living in NC, the leaves started to change color shortly after she passed. Then the winter trees are so dull and dormant, they appear to be dead. That is how I felt the year she passed even though I had this new family. I cannot tell you how many times I cried, and reached for the phone to call her to share my Son’s and Daughter’s firsts. The other reason I chose this song, is because she was instrumental in launching my trumpet playing. You see when I was in 5th grade, I really wanted to play the trumpet, but my Father said, “Girls don’t play trumpets, they play violins.” So guess who learned to read music by playing violin? That’s right, me! I suffered playing that thing for 2 ½ years before my Mother finally convinced my Dad to allow me to switch to trumpet. You see for about 1 ½ years of that same time frame, I had taught myself how to play the trumpet. That was where my passion lied. She said, “Norm, you know she really wants to play the trumpet not the violin, and she is really good at it too. You should let her switch.” So, in the middle of the 7th grade I started playing the trumpet in school instead of violin. She also sent in books of top value stamps to acquire my music stand, and send me off to college to pursue my Music Degree. That is why I chose this arrangement. Because it affords me the opportunity play my beautiful Olds Recording trumpet that also was purchased for my college days. And yes, it is the same horn that I continue to play today. I hope she will like what she hears in both my vocals and horn playing today. I love you so very much Mom and I will for eternity.
