Setting your Vista or Windows 7 Recording device to capture your "line in" for use with an external mixer.

If you look down by your system clock in the bottom right corner of your monitor, you should see a little icon that looks like a speaker. Right click on the icon and select"recording devices". A window will open that looks like this

You should see "line in" listed in these items. There should also be a green checkmark next to it to show that it is the selected recording device (in my example "stereo mix" is selected as my recording device). If "line in" is not selected as your recording device then you need to click on " Line in" to highlight it (blue) and select "set default" below and then select apply.

Try Speaking into your mic and see if the indicator next to it in the recording devices window moves or not. If the indicator is moving then you are good to go. If "Line in" is not even listed in this 'recording devices' window, then right click anywhere in the window and a menu will open, make sure that "Show disabled devices" and "Show disconnected devices" are both checked. Just like in the diagram below.

Now you should be able to click on "line in" to highlight it (blue) and select "set default" and then click "apply". Speak into your Mic to make sure the indicator (green bars to the right of it) are moving. Your "line in" is now set as the default "recording device". With this window still open highlight "line in" and right click on it and select "properties". A new window will open that should look like this.

Click on the levels tab at the top. The window will now look like this.

Your line in volume slider should be set at about 75 While you are in this window, look and make sure that your line in is not muted (If it is there will be a little red circle with a line through it, similar to a "do not enter" symbol on the little blue speaker icon next to the line in level slider). Now your "line in" has been selected as the "recording device" and you know where to go if you need to make adjustments later. You can now close these "recording devices" windows

Next step is to check on our Playback devices and make sure that the correct devices are selected and the levels are adjusted so you can hear your microphone and music in your headphones. In order to do this I need you to right click on the little speaker icon, down by your system clock again, but this time you will be selecting "playback devices". A window will open that looks like this.

Check to make sure that there is a green checkmark next to "speaker". If not, click on "speakers" to highlight (blue) and then click on "set default". The green checkmark will appear. Now right click on the "speaker" and select "test". Your speakers should play a chime, first in the left speaker and then in the right. Your speakers are now set as the default playback device. With headphones plugged into your PC they will automatically cancel out the speakers on your system and the sound will play only in the headphones.

Now..right click once again on the "speaker" and select "Properties". Another window will open that looks like this.

Click on the levels tab to display this menu.

This is where you will adjust the amount of microphone volume you want to hear from your microphone in your headphones while recording. First check to make sure that nothing is muted. The top slider will be your main volume and should be set at about 75 (this will adjust the amount of all sounds being played on your PC, mic, and music). Now adjust the slider for "line in" to a comfortable level while speaking into your Mic and listening in your headphones. Then click on "ok" to close this box and you can also close the "sound" window. Your line in level is now set to a reasonable level and you now know how to go back if you need to adjust the amount of Microphone you are hearing in your headphones while recording.

Next thing to do is to run the singsnap wizard, paying close attention to the audio test in step 2.

In the top right corner of this step you will see "select an audio device", use the drop down menu by clicking on the little triangle to the right of the device name and select your "line in". Make sure when you speak into your Mic that the indicators are moving to show that it is indeed registering the sound. Continue through the wizard and save your settings.

Right click on the little speaker icon down by your system clock and select playback devices. Highlight the speakers by clicking on them and it will turn blue. Right click on this section and select "properties". Click on the levels tab and ajust the "line in" level slider to a comfortable volume in your headphones. Close this window and open a recorder on SingSnap. I usually set my record level on the singsnap recorder at half way up. This should capture your voice well without distortion.

If you find that you are getting distortion or your voice is too low you can go back into the windows "recording control" and adjust the "line in" accordingly. Just keep in mind that windows has "recording control" and "volume control" and they look very similar, so be sure and have the right control open. Once you have a clear recording level to your satisfaction, you won't have to adjust windows record levels again.

The next step is to check the settings on Adobe flash player.
Right click anywhere on a singsnap recorder to bring up a menu, you should see "settings", select it and this will open the adobe flash player settings window.

Along the bottom you will see a little microphone icon, click on it and this will bring up the Microphone settings for the Adobe Flash Player (as shown). Just below where it says "microphone" check to be sure that "line in" is selected, if not...just as you did in the wizard, use the drop down menu to the right of the listed recording device and select "line in". Then close the adoble flash player settings window.
