In this tutorial I will explain how to use "line in" to capture your external mixer for use in SingSnap with Windows XP
The first thing to do is to open your volume control mixer. In order to do this, double click on the little speaker icon down next to your system clock in the bottom right corner of your monitor. If the speaker icon is not there then go to "start/control panel/sound and audio devices", this will open a window, in the middle of that window you will see "place volume icon in the task bar" place a checkmark next to it and select apply. This way you will always have the icon in your task bar. Now you can close that window. Then double click on the new little speaker icon next to the system clock. Now that you have the volume settings window open, it should look like this.
Under each slider is a mute button, make sure that "line is" is not muted. If "line in" is not included in this mixer, we will have to enable it. Now...click on "options" in the top left corner of the volume control window and select "properties". This will open another window that should look something like this.
In the lower section is a list of devices for playback, this is where you will add "line in" to the volume control window, by putting a checkmark next to it. In the "adjust volume for" section you will see Playback and Recording, Playback is currently selected. Select Recording and you will see a list of available recording devices on your PC. Make sure to place a check mark (if it isn't already there) in "line in". Then click on "ok". This will open the "recording control" window. Which will look something like this.
Place a checkmark under "line in" to select it as your recording device and set the slider at about 1/3rd volume for now, you can do some other adjustments to this after recording your first sample on SingSnap. After setting "line in" as your recording device and adjusting the volume you can close this window.
Congrats....your soundcard is now set to "line in" and ready to accept the signal from your external mixer that is plugged into your "line in" input on your soundcard.
Next thing to do is to run the SingSnap wizard, paying close attention to the audio test in step 2.
In the top right corner of this step you will see "select an audio device", use the drop down menu by clicking on the little triangle to the right of the device name and select your "line in". Make sure that when you speak into your Mic that the indicators are moving to show that it is indeed registering the sound. Continue through the wizard and save your settings.
Double click on the little speaker icon down by your system clock and the playback menu will open again. Speak into your mic and adjust the volume on "line in" so you can hear yourself well in your headphones. Close this window and open a recorder on SingSnap.
I usually set my record level on the SingSnap recorder at half way up. This should capture your voice well without distortion. If you find that you are getting distortion or your voice is too low, you can go back into the windows "recording control" and adjust the "line in" accordingly. Just keep in mind that windows has "recording control" and "volume control" and they look very similar, so be sure and have the right control open. Once you have a clear recording level to your satisfaction, you won't have to adjust windows record levels again.
The next step is to check the settings on Adobe flash player. Right click anywhere on the SingSnap recorder to bring up the menu, you should see "settings", select it and this will open the adobe flash player settings window.
Along the bottom you will see a little microphone icon, click on it and this will bring up the Microphone settings for the Adobe Flash Player (as shown). Just below where it says "microphone"check to be sure that "line in" is selected, if not...just as you did in the wizard, use the drop down menu to the right of the listed recording device and select "line in". Then close the adoble flash player settings window.
