I have so many songs that I consider to be special...The one I have chosen is because it came out at a very important time of my life...The year was 1954...I would become 16 years of age...I would really discover girls...I would leave school and go to work...I would also leave London (The City of my birth, and live in Margate on the Kent Coast)...a year of dramatic changes.
Having a good sort out the other day, I came across a School-Boys Diary...dated 1954...The only year I have ever kept a diary, oh my I had a few chuckles reading through the pages...I delivered groceries on Friday nights and Saturdays and with tips would earn the princely sum of around
£1...I would be expected to hand over 10 shillings to my mother...I spent 6 shillings probably taking my girlfriend to the Cinema twice...and saved 4 shillings...and so it went on.
I have a list of the movies I saw and how I rated them...#1...The Robe...starring Richard Burton,Victor Mature, Michael Rennie and Jean Simmons...Also a page with the autograph of Stanley of Englands greatest footballers.
I sang solo for the London Schools choir...and loved music, and listening to all the popular stars singing on the radio...Without a doubt, Johnnie Ray was my favourite, and he seemed to be the favourite of several girls in my life at that time...I used to take him off, they all seemed to like that...So I am going to sing his big UK #1 hit of 1954...It spent 18 weeks in the charts, and went to #1 on the 15th April...On that day at school in a house cricket match, my house Alpha scored 80 for 4 wkts...I didn't get to bat...and Gamma house were all out for 49...I took 2 wickets for 16 runs...That will be total bewilderment for our American friends !!
On the day before...I had a super time with Yvonne, she has written something in shorthand, and I have never found out what it said !! and on the following day I was with Vicky at her home and she was trying to teach me to dance !!
Johnnie Ray was probably responsible for me wanting to sing, along with Frankie Laine, Guy Mitchell and Adam Faith.
Here is my tribute to Johnnie 'Cry' Ray...hope you like it !

Super sing on this golden oldie. What fun it must have been to read your thoughts from back then. I think you must of been quite well of earning a pound a week. I remember my first Saturday job payed me £1.75 and that was much later.

Oh memories, such memories different songs can bring, happy sad, emotion flows along with the memories they bring. Was fun reading some of yours, sounds like you remember them with a smile. Great song and sing x
