Singing supercharges the endorphins - those "feel good" chemicals so great for healing!

Ah, for this fabulous, fifth round where we dance through the finale' of the contest, this song seemed perfect since it reminds me of skating on the ice, my way of dancing through the Winters when I was a child. Every home my parents provided for us in the snowy climate provided joyful memories, no matter the time of year. One home's property backed up to a field where we found the pond would freeze over, making the perfect skating rink where Mom had enough ice to teach my brother and I some skating moves. Billy took to being able to skate backwards, although I had a tough time with that one. One year, my mother made a rink where two of the backyards came together, watered the rink, smoothed out the ice until we had a very special and large sized rink. Mom would set up a radio so we could skate to the Christmas music and the local children would join us.

When some friends and I would cross over the street to find ice, we would sing and skate around trails as best we could maneuver, always enjoying our "winter wonderland." We sang songs such as "The Locomotion," or "Smoking in the Boy's Room." Summer time was when I rode my brother's dirt bike over those trails so they were none too smooth. I'm feeling those warm and fuzzy memories of staying outside as long as I could stand being out in the cold, and when we went back inside to warm up, Mom would make us a nice cup of hot cocoa. We all participated in the whole gamut of traditions, making cookies, Christmas lists for Santa, going to see Santa, and it mattered not whether we lived in a grand home or a smaller one. My parents always made the holidays magical for all of us.

At one home, there was a fence at the end of the backyard with a large snow drift leading to it. I remember carrying my skates by their laces and walking up the drift to meet a neighbor boy who would lift me up over that fence and onto the frozen ground so we could skate. (That same area was next to the sidewalk we used to walk up to the beach in the summer time.)

That home marked the last winter days we would experience in the colder climate. After the Blizzard of '77, my dad got himself a transfer to Louisiana and we moved "down South" to see what new adventures awaited us. We all finally settled in Florida. These days, I try to make Christmas as nice as I can at my place. I'd love to create the most magical time of year for the parents who did so much to provide the best they could for us. (I'm still working on it being the best ever.) Every day I feel very fortunate to have my loving parents with me still, and only a few miles away.

One of the reasons I love these contests is they help me to reflect upon such great memories. Thank you all for a fabulous time!

I'm so sorry that the ending cut off like it did. I didn't realize that! Thank you for pointing that out, Mark! Merry Christmas.
