The Singing Chat Room
The live singing Chat Room can be a lot of fun. It's a great place to hang out with friends, meet new ones, and listen to some awesome singing. Chat Admins are always on hand to help you out, but here is a basic overview of how to use the room, as well as some tips on getting the most out of your experience.
These instructions will work for both the public and private chat rooms. Please read below for instructions on how to create your own private room!
Learning The Room!
When you first click on the chat link, you will be greeted with a series of rooms. The 'SingSnap Chat! Main Lobby!' is our official chat room where you will almost always have Chat-Admins running a list and there to help with any problems or concerns.
Entering the SingSnap Singing Chat Room
Once you enter the room, it may seem like there is a lot going on, but we're going to break down each component and you will see how easy it actually is.
Understanding the Room
On the upper right side of the window, you will see a list of user names below it. This shows you who is participating in the chat.
Next to the username, you may see one of two icons. A microphone or a web cam.
If you see a camera icon, that means their camera is on and you can view them by clicking on the icon next to their name. They will then appear in your "dock" below the text field. If you see a microphone, that means they are currently on the mic singing!
If you want to watch/listen to someone, you must click on their name. To find out who is on the microphone singing, keep an eye on the list that the admins are holding.
You can communicate in three ways in our chat room. There is a text box where you can communicate with the entire room. You may select your font color and style by clicking on the large blue "Aa". There are emoticons you may access by clicking on the yellow smiley face, as well as avatars if you select the person icon. Finally, you can select how you view the chat - whether it is in Text Mode (Classic) or Bubble Mode (Similar to cell phone)
You can also whisper someone in the room. Left click on the username in the list. A box will appear with a series of options.
Click "Personal/Whisper Message". Type your message and then press "Whisper" and your message will appear in the main chat box but will only be visible to the person you selected from the list.
You may also send a private message by clicking on the username in the list and selecting "Invite To Private Chat". A box will pop up letting you know your request for a private chat has been sent.
If the recipient accepts your Private Chat request, a separate window will open. Only those invited into this private chat will be able to view the conversation.
You can switch between private rooms/main chat by accessing the rooms on the left side tab bar. When there are unseen messages in any room, a small number in an orange circle will let you know how many messages you have missed.
Singing In the Chat Room & Turning On My Mic
Now that we've gone over the basic room functionality, it's time to talk about the important stuff. Singing! If you would like to turn on your camera; you must click on the Enable A/V button in the bottom left.
Please Note: This will also enable your audio. So you must immediately disable the microphone option by clicking on the microphone and ensuring it gets a line through it.
When it is time to sing, if you have not already enabled your A/V - do that now and your mic will be on! If your camera is already on but you've disabled your microphone, hover over your personal box and click on the microphone to 'light it up'! Now you're ready to sing!
When you are finished singing, disable your mic again.
You can see who is watching/listening by looking at the menu on the top right that says "Users" "Who's Watching me"
You can also adjust your setting by clicking on the "Gear" icon located either to the right of your Mic/Cam on your photo or in the left menu bar. A window will open and you need to click on the A/V settings.
Under this section you can also adjust your General Settings such as;
- Skin (Look of the room)
- And who you allow invitations from
Furthermore, you can disable Sound Alerts and adjust the volume level.
Lastly, you can change your fonts and adjust miscellaneous items;
Creating Your Own Private Room
This is super simple now. If you load the main chat window you will see a button that says "Create New Room"
A new box will appear where you can name your room, determine if it is public or private and assign a password if you would like. You can also enter a description. Type carefully because this cannot be edited once created.
The room will remain active for as long as it is occupied. Once the room is empty, it will delete itself.
Please make sure you are familiar with the rules and general etiquette before entering the chat.
- No participants under 18 years of age
- No nudity, extreme profanity, racist remarks, lewd/vulgar behavior, or obscene sexual remarks will be permitted.
- No intentional room disruptions. (eg. posting fake lists, intentionally turning on your audio ("A") out of turn).
- No hurtful comments about other members' singing. Positive room environment is encouraged.
- Warn verbally and in text if your song contains explicit lyrics or potentially offensive language and/or content.
- No posting of links unless done in a whisper.
- Avoid typing in all caps as it equates to "Shouting" online, unless you are actually attempting to shout to get someone's attention.
The following aren't rules, but can be considered "chat etiquette" and are strongly encouraged:
- Be respectful of others. Provide positive feedback to other singers, keep your 'on mic' time to 5 minutes or less to ensure the wait time for others is as minimal as possible.
- If you want to sing, simply direct a comment to the list holder to be added. Sometimes the room is very busy and your request may be missed. Be patient, and simply repeat the request.
- Try to be prepared for when it's your turn on mic. (eg: have your song queued up and be ready to go) Have Fun! We want the room to be an enjoyable and safe experience for all!
Frequently Asked Questions
Here we have tried to answer the most common questions we get about the chat room.
How Do I Get Added to the Rotation List?
When you are ready to be added, simply type in the room: "Please add me to the list." A chat admin will usually respond to you to let you know you have been added.
If the room is moving quickly, your request may be missed the first time around. Do not feel like you are being ignored, it is just a simple oversight. Make your request again politely.
Once you have been added to the list, keep an eye on the rotation that the chat admins will publish frequently. It will be updated and the next person in line will be at the front of the list. You can keep track this way of when you can expect your turn.
How Do I Sing In The Room?
Before you can sing Live in the Chatroom you need to make sure that Stereo mix is enabled, so that we can hear your music. If you require assistance in setting up your sound click on the appropriate tutorial below.
If you have trouble following the link or finding Stereo mix just ask a Chat-admin if there is someone that can help you. If they're unable to assist you send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Next you need to open a secondary browser/tab and load the song from SingSnap that you wish to sing. It can either be a pre-recorded performance or just the backing track so you can sing live.
Request to be added to the singing list and once you see your name appear within the rotation, patiently wait until it is your turn on mic. Once your turn arrives and the Chat-Admin alerts the room that it is your turn on mic.
Once you allow access to your mic by clicking on the cam icon at the top right hand corner, you will need to hover over your box on your dock. You must then click on the white lock icon, to turn on your mic. (Your mic should then blue). This will turn your audio on and the room can now hear what you say. Then press play on your song and perform!
Please note: Do not lock your mic unless it is your turn to sing as it causes Feedback in the room. Once you are finished singing - unlock your mic so the next singer can get started.
Why Do People Only Hear My Voice, and Not the Music?
In the Chat Room, unlike recording on the site, your sound card should be on What U Hear or Stereo. This is so both your mic and the music coming through your computer can be heard by others.
What Does CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC Mean?
That is the other members applauding the performance.
Can I Block Someone in the Chat Room?
You can't block another user, but you can chose to ignore them so you don't have to see their replies. If you click on the user's name in the left hand user list you can then click on the Ignore option.
