HAPPY BIRTHDAY POPPY! QUEEN OF HEARTS . Poppy, known to her fans as AMAPOLA, is a Filipino-American singer who was born in Cebu, Philippines. Her parents were Hawaiian born Asian-American Manuel Kabahar Cabase of San Nicolas and Priscilla Vale Campogan of Tuburan, Cebu. Both parents were musicians and educators. Amapola's first piano recital was at the age of five. She then began singing her father's compositions & her mother's lyrics in the Visayan movies the following year and then co-starred in her first film at the age of seven. Her successful career from a child star into her teens, took her to Manila where her television, stage, recording and film career flourished. She sought more challenges on concert tours around Asia & the Pacific including a successful concert at the HIC Auditorium one week before Elvis Presley's concert in Honolulu. Amapola was a local celebrity until she eventually set her sights for the US Mainland. She juggled performances at The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco and in her weekly TV show, which still holds the record for the longest running magazine-variety show produced locally in the Bay Area. Directed by Hollywood Producer/Director Dirk Dirksen, "Amapola Presents Show" was aired on Channel 20, KEMO-TV from 1977 to 1983. Syndication began during the show's 2nd season. The show folded when Channel 20 KEMO-TV moved its headquarters to Los Angeles and Amapola accidentally discovered a new career in the Cruising industry entertainment world. . Among her many awards and merits In the Philippines were the Tinig Award, the Manila Film Festival acknowledgment, Awit Awards (twice) (the local equivalent of the Grammy), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philippines National Press Club in 1987. In the United States, Amapola was awarded the Eye Award for Best Entertainer of the year, the Philippine Cultural Award in San Francisco, The Cultural Award in Michigan, and a plaque from former California Governor Gerry Brown during the Browns for Brown campaign just to name a few. Amapola joined the Regent Seven Seas Cruises in 2006 and 2007 for the World Cruise and was requested to join the ship again in 2011. Her second novel, "Promising Skies" garnered rave reviews from New York Best selling author, Ellen Tanner Marsh who said "...Amapola writes like a dream." The 2nd novel was published in 2006 following her first multi-awarded novel "Coming Home."
